So tonight we're celebrating my daughter's Birthday -- hurray! -- but that means 12 tweens are coming over to sleep over. Yup, you read that right. Twelve tweens. All night.
Cake. Ice cream. Pizza. Donuts for breakfast.
Can you say, a dieter's nightmare? Every food I tend to gorge on combined with high-level stress, and a sick hubby to boot! So I'm trying to plan ahead. This is where the proverbial rubber meets the road: how do we handle stress without eating? I'm determined that planning ahead will make the difference.
My plan -- besides vacuuming today and running around buying cake and ice cream -- is to eat a healthy dinner BEFORE the girls arrive, so I have something in me when the pizza gets here. Setting aside some healthy snacks in the fridge -- and offering them to the tweens, too -- like veggies for if I get a yearn to snack. If I really feel on the verge, reaching out to one of my SparkPeople buddies. And a calm room -- a place to go if it gets overwhelming just to take a few breaths and remember this will pass and today is about having fun for my daughter. I don't have to be the perfect hostess or have the best party. And I don't need to over eat.
Planning ahead for how to cope with stressful situations is a vital part of staying on track. For me, sometimes all that involves is reminding myself there are other ways to cope with whatever is going to happen besides eating. Then, in the heat of the moment, that reminder comes to me.
And then I remember how much better I feel the next day knowing I wake up feeling energetic and hungry rather than bloated and regretful.
So bring the party on.... :)
