So the requirement of my current challenge to blog about habits each day is right up my alley as I think understanding how habits form and can be changed is critical to weight loss and establishing a healthy lifestyle. I was going to concentrate on the mental aspect of habit forming but this morning as I was brushing my teeth I realised that I had lost the habit of flossing at the same time. Teeth and gums are very important to general health. Poor oral hygiene can affect both the intake of nutrients (if chewing is compromised) and heart and lung health (as damaging bacteria can enter the body through infected gums).

The last time my teeth were checked only a few weeks ago the dentist was very pleased with them; but that seems to have led me to relax my effort. Now I don't want to be like the character in Pam Ayers' poem who laments,
Oh, I wish Id looked after me teeth,
And spotted the dangers beneath
All the toffees I chewed,
And the sweet sticky food.
Oh, I wish Id looked after me teeth.

Therefore, from today I will reinstitute the habit of flossing my teeth at least once a day! emoticon

This is SO important!! I am a flosser and with good reason. After years of "bad teeth" and "poor mouth health" even though I was an occasional flosser, I had to have that deep cleaning thing done, twice! NEVER AGAIN. Now, I have a healthy mouth and only have to visit the periodontist every 6 months. Woohoo! And the whole thing about your gum/mouth health affecting heart health scares me. And should scare everyone! Get flossing you guys!
So yes, you've picked a wonderful new habit. Wishing you success and happy gums.

    Great habit..I have to confess, I'm rather lazy about flossing, but I always have been blessed with strong teeth. emoticon

It's a great idea to review good habits that have slipped away and reinstitute them. Thanks for the reminder!

    That is a great habit, and one I have lost in the meantime. I will not make this my main focus (I truly have to hold on to that water habit, I have such a hard time with that), but I will definitely get myself some more good quality floss and finally make a dentist appointment. It's been long overdue. Thanks for the reminder!!

    Thanks for the reminder about a habit that I really need to develop. I wonder why I tend to avoid it when it's easy to do, doesn't take that much time. My husband does periodically tell me that if I ignore my teeth, they'll just go away...

    Good plan! I got an EZ flosser and use it while I drive to and from work- make ahabit you can stick with! And you don't want to lose your smile! emoticon

    My mother developed gingivitis and had to have her gums "trimmed" - that was enough to scare me into daily flossing no matter what!!!! OW!!!!
