Calories Out

Lately, I've noticed that Sparkpeople seems to have somewhat of an obsession with the calorie counters on cardio machines. There have been several warnings about not using those because they are so inaccurate - Sparkpeople's experts say that can overestimate the calories burned by up to 40%.

What surprises me with this?

The cardio machines at my gym almost always show FEWER calories burned than the fitness tracker on Sparkpeople does. I don't know if my gym has really good equipment (they ask for age, weight and have a heart rate tracker) or if they are really off.

Either way, I don't get overly concerned with the calories out either way. Sure, I track my workouts faithfully, but for me my rate of exertion, my heart rate, and most importantly, the results I see, are what counts, not a number on a machine or a webpage.

    you are right the machine at the gym and the tracker here all go by average person at this weight and age . Everyone burns calories at a different rate and time numereous times a day. You are so smart not to go by that . Go by how defined your muscles are , how great you feel, when you work out you build muscle and make your new cells happy . you have better skin and age slower. the list is endless. once a year you should have a bmi check to see how much muscle to fat ratio you have . Other than that go by how you feel and how your clothes fit. hugs very good point indeed.

    Great blog!

I never pay attention to the calorie burn trackers. They vary widely from person to person, and different cardio machines.
