Another surprise

Thursday, February 28, 2013

It seems my birthday keeps going on and on. Okay by me! Yesterday my gardener came with two plants for me. Again he used his hard earned money to buy these plants. One a lovely hanging basket from him and one from his neice who comes here with him from time to time who's Birthday parties I go to and such. She is a cute little girl.....well, all Mexican children seem so cute to me and are always so well behaved and happy. Very few temper tantrums down here. I always wonder why....but then I look at the way they live and they certainly aren't spoiled...for the most part no money for that. And they are safe here and can play on the cobblestone streets and outside for hours with the nice weather. I see the big brothers or sisters who might just be six or seven themselves holding the hands of their three and four year old siblings walking down the street to the market to get something for their Moms. I wish so much that it were that safe in the states where people could just let their kids play outside all the time without worry. I know even when we go see the grandkids that we only let them play outside in the back yard and not the front yard even though it is a very safe neighborhood. Gosh, I remember growing up in the country and never coming inside.....Mom had to fight with us to come in to dinner. And then we still wanted to go back outside after dinner and play things like "kick the can"...gosh am I showing my age!!!

Anyway, it's a shame the world has had to change in that respect and a shame that the technology has "captured" our youth and they, for the most part don't get enough exercise. It's good to see that the Biggest Loser is trying to address childhood obesity. It is so needed.

Cheers everyone. Have a great evening.
Sallie

Ahhh the good old days! We use to play outside all day and only came home for meals. At night, we had to come in when the street lights went on. My mom didn't really need any details about where we were. All the neigbourhood children played together. I don't remember even having many toys. We played tag, hide and go seek, rode our bikes and explored the fields and trees. We were only allowed to watch TV for a couple of hours on Saturday morning and that was just fine with us. We had things to do, people to see and places to go! You are so right Sallie. It is very different now.

I love playing outside with my little granddaughter! It is sad though that in this day and age, we can't allow the kids to be outside without supervision as they are in danger every minute! I sure wish we could go back 50 years to where it was safe to have the kids outside from morning until night and not worry about what they were doing or where they were.

Loved playing outside as a kid and, like you said, didn't want to come in.
Now its more dangerous, or perceived to be, and kids are found playing on computers in their rooms. So sad!

Lucky you, that was a wonderful surprise.
It is nice to see children playing and walking
outside but unfortunately it is not safe in most
western societies. I am so happy that when my
son was a toddler we lived in a village in Greece
and the children were always outside. Everyone
knew everyone and people looked out for each
others' children. I'm not sure if it's the same today.
Have a lovely day and Happy first of March. emoticon

How nice to keep enjoying your birthday. Such a nice surprise . You are right about safety. I live in the suburbs and the speed limit is only 25mph. The cars come speeding around the corner and it scares me to let my grandson ride his bike, even on the sidewalk. Enjoy your birthday week.

I wish I could help my granddaughters be happier with what they have. Seems like we waste a lot of effort and emotion on temper tantrums and being unhappy. What a great observation of happy and cooperative children living with much less. Yes, I remember playing outside for hours and hours. The first time I put my own daughter outside by herself (my mother had been encouraging me to do it for months) in the fenced in back yard, just before she turned 3, I heard a knock on my door. My neighbor was there to tell me that my daughter had gotten her clothing caught on the fence and was hanging there by her shirt. I never let her go out without me again until she was 7. My grandkids and I play outside almost every day, especially in the great weather we are having now!
