Day 58 - Midwest Winter and Exercise

It is winter in the upper midwest and there is still serious snow and ice outside.

I've been getting out most days, driving Dad (89) over to the Mall for an indoor walk. Pace is moderate with stops as indicated but, the exercise is good for the dude. He supplements the walk with warm up exercises from a Tai Chi Dvd: great for hitting those less used joints.

My supplement is 2 miles with a Leslie Sansone DVD or 3 hours volunteering at the library. While the library my not sound like a hot bed of exercise -- it really is. Sure, I spend a bit of time seated and sorting books on a trolley but, once that is done, the bending, stretching, and weight work kicks in for the majority of the time. Bend to get to the lower shelves. Even better, get down on the floor for the bottom shelves and then get back up off the ground. Stretching is for those higher shelves. As to the weight lifting -- some books are heavy enough to be dealt with one at a time. Other wise, you grab a stack and the weight is there. All in all, a win-win. The library gets a volunteer and I get my exercise for the day.
