Tipping for Water Delivery? Other?

Thursday, February 28, 2013

Yesterday, as I was out for a fitness walk, I passed a water delivery man returning from a house to his truck. He was complaining loudly to someone on his cell phone, "Man, if each customer gave me just a dollar, I'd have 40 dollars today!" That got me thinking about people who deliver things to my house. I don't get water delivered, so it never occurred to me that the delivery people would expect (or even hope for) a tip. Certainly I tip for pizza delivery (though we haven't ordered one in ages), but I don't tip the UPS or Fedex delivery people. Often, they just drop packages on the porch, ring the bell, and are gone before I can even get to the door. So I'm curious what other Sparkers think about tipping. Do you tip for water delivery? Flower delivery? Other delivery?

EDIT: Thanks, everyone for great feedback!

Interesting blog Celia. I never have thought of of tipping the UPS or Fedex man. Like others said they usually leave it and run. However mine are very good to me. I do know the name of my UPS guy. I should think to give them something at Christmas but I haven't been home for Christmas in years. I always thought they and PO could not accept tips.

How about hairdressers? I give a tip but sometimes resent it because it is already so expensive! As I age and my income on retirement isn't what it used to be I love the idea of tipping but can't do big tipping any more or I might as well stay home.

I tip the UPS guy (handsomely) at Christmas. We have a bad drive and a bad road, so I tip him and the mail lady and the trash pickup (now that we have it) once a year.

Although the UPS guy not bringing my husband's medical supplies these last few days has him on my poopie list.

I am not a great tipper! But, with food I am and that is the only thing I tip for. But, last year I ordered a new full size bed and the delivery man wouldn't put it together (set up on a metal frame only) unless I 'took care of them' - that is what he said!!! So since there were two me men - I gave $15 per man. Duh - won't do that again. $10 would have be enough. Tipping is a personal thing. My friend Pat tips really well and gets mad at me for only giving $1 on a $8 meal at Friendly's. She will give $3 which I think is a bit much. I just say to her - do your thing and leave me alone!!! LOL

I tip for food delivery, but I have never tipped for other types of deliveries like UPS, FedEx, etc.

Well, I tip for food delivery (pizza, Chinese, etc) on the rare occasion that we get it but it honestly would not have crossed my mind to tip for packages, flowers, water, etc. We also always tip the pet service if we have someone in to check on our cat. Now you've got me thinking!

I always tipped for pizza delivery, but haven't ordered in years. When my son was a teenager he delivered food for a Chinese restaurant. One day when it was snowing I took his route since I didn't want a 16 year old driving in that. I made a delivery to a huge "McMansion" and the guy gave me a quarter. Did I mention it was snowing??

I don't tip for a package delivery, but I when I get a delivery of furniture I'll give each of the guys $5 or even $10 depending on how much they had to do. That just has to be back breaking work.

We give our water delivery person a christmas card and a tip. Once a year. More like a thank you gift than a tip. I would never think of tipping other delivery people. We make our own pizza, but have tipped for food delivery in the past.

I don't tip the ups and Fed ex not flowers...I would probably not tip water if I got it.

Pizza I did tip in the past when I ordered it.

    Interesting blog.

I don't have things delivered to my house usually, and I believe that UPS or FedEx are not allowed to accept tips because of company policy. So I'm not really qualified to answer, but I would tip for floral delivery, pizza delivery, things like that. I do usually drop a dollar in those tipping jars in Starbucks, Subway, and the likes. . .

I haven't. But my husband some times tips the McDonald's cashier at drive thru... Always well received!
