Read Mark 15.
In this chapter Pilate is faced with several choices. History indicates that he had other troubles with Rome and made several bad decisions. Pilate was ultimately a politician, trying to please the majority while always working his own goals. If you look at the events from Matthew and Luke also we get a better picture. He has as much information as is needed to know that Jesus is innocent. It is told that his wife even sent word to let Him go, yet Pilate does not. Some have said that Pilate was predestined to deliver Jesus for crucifixion but I disagree.
He had a choice, we all have choices. While it is a fact that Jesus would be sacrificed, the final events could have been different. As sorrowful as it may be, Jesus was born to eventually be killed as a sacrifice for the world's sins. That could not be avoided, the players and method could have been different. God did not choose the how, we did. The question put to Pilate and the question put before the world is really the same as what was asked back in chapter eight; Who do YOU say that Jesus is?
