Cholesterol numbers

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

Well, they checked my cholesterol when i was in the hospital. I guess with 5 vials of blood, they tested everything. I went to the doctor's today for a follow-up, and go my numbers.

My total cholesterol went up to 142 last time from 104, and was back down to 105. My LDL had gone up to 72 from 51, and was back down to 53. My triglycerides were 197, and dropped to 128. All these were great,

The problem was the HDL. Mine was 29 last Feb., and last August went up to 33, which was the first time over 30. Now it is down to 26. My doctor said that in summer it will be higher, because on top of my exercise, I will be more active overall, She told me to just get back to losing weight, and keep doing my exercise. She suggested wine 2-3 times a week, but I do not consume alcohol.

With high BP, and diabetes, I seem to be able to control them. Eat a low salt, low carb diet, and no issues. My cholesterol numbers seem to be moving in the right general direction, but sometimes they drop, or spike upwards for no reason I can discern. I can't control it, and that bothers I am happy with the numbers though, and hope the HDL pops back over 30 in August.

Have a great day.

I don't really know anything about cholesterol or what to do about it, so I cannot offer any advice.

Good you are happy though, see what the next test brings!

Not sure if your doctor has you on statin drugs. These can bring down good cholesterol as well as the bad. I'm not sure cholesterol is the evil that big pharma makes it out to be. Your brain needs it to function. Makes me wonder why so many more people are developing Alzheimers and why so many more people are taking statin drugs....JMHO.

You might look into resveratrol instead of the wine, I don't drink wine either and I think it would probably make you gain weight, as it does me. Getting your HDL up may be tricky because the foods that raise it often are anticoagulants and wouldn't be compatible with your other meds (I'm guessing.) I know that fish oil, which raises HDL effectively (especially krill oil) but it also drives down blood pressure.

I'm glad to see that your other numbers look so good. emoticon
