The Silliest Thing I Ever Did to Lose Weight

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

The silliest thing I did to lose weight was when I was 15. One summer I ate 900 calories a day and popped Chicklets gum all day. I got very skinny and had very fresh and minty breath. But I gained the weight back quickly and to this day cannot chew gum without feeling nauseous!!

What’s the silliest thing you ever did to try to lose weight?

Most of the diets. Cabbage soup diet and the nothing but eggs and grapefruit diet. Neither were healthy and the weight loss was only brief. I still eat all those things. I love cabbage soup for supplementing my daily diet. But you can't live on it alone.

A 600 calorie diet when I was a Senior in high school. I just ate a lot of low calorie foods (lettuce, dill pickles, Tab, hard boiled eggs). I would even allow myself a treat of a few Cheez Its every night with my glass of Tab. Probably is what messed up my metabolism, too.

I've never really tried before this try. I was never heavy as a teen and didn't really start gaining until I got married and pregnant.

I wasn't much into dieting really. But for a whole school year I ate only a Tigermilk Bar and a Tab every day for lunch when I was in high school. I had no concept of what healthy eating looked like. I think the year before that I had a strawberry yogurt and a burrito everyday. I am an obvious creature of habit.

The most dangerous thing I did was get anorexic as a teen. I'm glad I lived through it!

Great topic. I don't think I ever did any silly thing. I did fast a couple times, but that's it. The silliest thing I ever didn't do was actually count calories to watch what I ate!

emoticon The Cabbage soup Diet, for SURE!! I can still get diarrhea just by thinking about Cabbage Soup!!

emoticon I sort of tried the Ayds (sp?) Candies Diet when my Mother was doing it, but I think I ate half a box of Candy at once and decided that they tasted too good to be any good as a Diet aid.

Oh gosh, so many. The rotation diet (which I still think of doing, Yikes!) It's a three week thing. 600 calories for two days, 900 for three days, then 1200 for two days, then a week of 1200 calories, then back to the 6, 9 1200 calories for a week. I don't think I ever made the whole three weeks.

In high school I would skip lunch every day and sit in the hall with another girl who also wanted to lose weight. (Neither of us was fat, either...just adolescent and foolish.) Our parents were sending lunch money and we turned it in but didn't eat...I can't believe they didn't question us. I got down to 117 for my Junior Prom this way...but it didn't last. I probably screwed up my metabolism forever with my silliness.

For me it was probably during high school wrestling. My junior year I had to lose to wrestle at a certain weight and it was a cycle of weigh in, binge, starve, repeat. A wrestling match is three 2-minute periods and I was finding that if I did not win in the first two, I ran out of energy in the third and either struggled or lost. My senior year I wrestled at my normal weight and it was great having energy for the entire match!

The past two diets I have been on (WW and SP) have been more sensible about eating in moderation.

Not eating enough and being surprised when I couldn't stick with it, juicing, shakes and playing all sorts of games before my weekly weigh ins including taking laxatives. It's taken me a long time to realize I don't need to starve myself to lose weight and keep it off and even longer to actually implement a healthy plan I can stick with. I'm so glad I'm not in that place anymore!

I have to chime in as the resident oddball. I think I may have the record for holding on to extra weight without even one attempt to get rid of it (25 years). What? Diet? Me? Yep, the Queen of Denial, right here.

I tried not eating that didn't work, I tried drinking water between each bite of food I ate, that didn't work either and basically lived in the bathroom.

The original Atkins diet in its strictest form. It made me so sick and my body reacted like someone with diabetes having a spell. No wonder the diet had us testing our urine for ketones with the same test sticks diabetics use. That was one dangerous diet, and I refuse to try any modification of it.

I tried that slimfast ONCE and it gave me such terrible gas cramps that I laid in bed all afternoon ---- never tried that again. As far as other things, gosh.....let me count the ways..... The ONLY thing that really works is that good old healthy good foods and exercise and TIME!!!!

LOL let me count the ways!! There was the liquid diet powder (Cambridge??) Then there was eating puffed cereal with a bit of fat free milk for breakfast, a sandwich of a 30 cal. meat and two slices of 40 cal. bread for lunch and a frozen low cal meal for dinner, I could go on and on. The weight ALWAYS came off and MORE always came back on!!

Now I try to eat healthy whole food meals and get lots of exercise - its working much better!!

Slim fast. Before they had all the great foods they have now . . . it was just 2 tiny bars a day & a regular dinner.

I fit into my sister's wedding dress & then started gaining it all back & then some as soon as the wedding was over!

In my early 30s I tried slimfast for about two weeks. That was when I found out what migraines feel like! So I decided no more gimmicks for me!

Then six years ago, a month befire we were to keave for our Key West wedding on the beach and I was at my heaviest, I started taking envy. Not sure how that's really spelled. It didn't do anything so then I decided for good this time, no more gimmicks.

I would have to say it was when I did the grapefruit diet. I hate grapefruit, so I basically starved. Lost a lot, but gained it all back.
