WARNING: Don't talk to people on-line!!

Monday, February 25, 2013

"I am the person your parents warned you about. Don't talk to people on-line." My oldest was laughing about this post on her Twitter page. It also got me thinking about SparkPeople!

We pour our hearts, souls and sometimes even our "bodies" into this site. I'm sure all of us that have kids have warned them about what to post on Facebook, Twitter, My Space, etc. Yet, here we are "laying it all our there." If only our kids knew!! emoticon

I think that sometimes it's easy to "talk" to people that we don't have to see face-to-face! It's less judgemental even though this is a very nonjudgemental place. Then, after we blog or post on a thread, we see how supportive this community is and it's all "downhill from there!" emoticon

I've said it before, but I'll say it again...I really wish that I could meet each of my SparkFriends face-to-face. It would be so great to sit down and chat over a cup of coffee. To share our stories of this journey in a more personal setting.

I know one of my local SparkTeams is having a "reunion" next month. This will be the third time we've met up. Each time I meet different people, which I really like. I hope I can see some "old" friends, too!

It will be nice to offer support where needed, share the successes and see how people have changed. Changed not only physically, but mentally. I love to see a person "blossom" into themselves where they feel good in their own skin.

So here's to all of us "breaking the rules" of talking to people on-line! I'm so GLAD I DID!

I completely agree. This is the one place where we congratulate people for posting pics of themselves in their underwear!

You are so right. It is as if the "be careful" rule applies everywhere but here on Spark.

Interesting! I've reflected on this very thought. I was excited about the trackers on line to help me get started at Spark but very skeptical about the friend networking for this very reason. Once I joined some teams, connected with people I never looked back. I have had opportunity to meet many supportive, encouraging friends here at Spark. Glad I broke the rules.

My very best friends in the whole world.. in real life... I met on Spark! We have met up many times, had weekends together for races and whatever, and one of them I see regularly since she only lives 2 hours away... in fact, we are going to the Bon Jovi concert together tomorrow night to celebrate my birthday. We saw Eric Church in November to celebrate hers!
This site has been a real blessing to me.

I've had online running friends since we first got Internet access in the mid 90s. When I hosted a few to attend a race, my mother watched them all very suspiciously. LOL
I'd love to meet up with Spark Friends in person. You're very lucky to have the opportunity.

HAHA - I think about that all the time!! Who knows - there still could be a few crazies on here.... ;-) Either way, I have made some great friends from all over the world, and have gotten to learn so much about other cultures that it's really been an invaluable tool for SO many reasons!! :-)

Yes, I know I bear my soul here but it just feels so safe and I get such good advice and such.
Here's to a wonderful community that we can trust!
Have a terrific day!

Wherever we go, we always want to meet SparkPeople in real time. The biggest challenge is surprisingly LOCAL! I mentor virtually all over the world now. Locally, in real time, I am working with several people on running 5Ks and working the healthy lifestyle. I encourage and motivate people daily! YET, I have no SparkPeople locally taking advantage of my help. I had to meet a Nebraskan SparkPerson, ONEKIDSMOM, at a Woman's Half Marathon here in St Petersburg! I'm still blessed to be able to work on line here at SparkPeople. I cherish all my SparkFriends. Present company included, of course!

We Sparkers, breaking the rules and losing weight and getting fit. Terrible!!

I like to think we work hard to bring out the best in one another. That's so human and positive. I'm with you on taking the risk of friendship on=line: worth taking!

I've thought about the same subject many times! We are the parents who don't practice what they preach! Yet, I feel that SP is a different kind of community and that's why I keep it separate from my FB account. We are all here for a reason and we mostly share our health journeys' experiences, even though some people choose to share more than that. It's ok, everyone is different and acts according to their own beliefs and experiences. But no matter what we do here, we should keep on advising our children to be extra, super cautious on the internet! Not only of strangers but even of what they choose to share with their "friends". Cases of cyber-bullying among schoolmates are unfortunately increasing and no kid is emotionally mature enough to handle something like that.

This community is different than most. I think that is one of the reasons I am drawn to it and one of the reasons it works. We all have goals and share them pretty regularly. We post about our failures and our victories. We count on others who have or are going through the same trials we are. I am still careful about what I post concerning my personal information but I think that has just been engrained in me to a point where it is now a habit. I love it here and find myself posting things that I would never post on Facebook. I can be real here, genuine.

Great post and I agree!

Excellent post and thank you for the reminder and the giggle at the same time. Have a good time at your reunion. There is no such thing where I live but maybe one day I will have the same opportunity to meet some of my online Spark friends.
