Even the dead have their idenity stolen

Monday, February 25, 2013

My Mom passed away on Feb 2, 2008.

Today, just a bit more than five years from her death, I get a letter from american express saying for er to contact them about issues with her credit at the credit bureause. Of course they give no pone number, just to write them

So I am running around showing hubby what is going on

I took care of everything on her account via their team who deals with customers who are deceased and everything was settled fair and square sadly though all that paperwork is in storage. Figured that after 2 years and accounts closed there was no need for me to have it at my side anymore

So I tried going to their website and went into her account. Oh my gosh. there is was. A bill for 97..71 there are trying to collect Went though all the year end statements, and zero balalnce since 2009. Now this shows up and no information i is given .

Call American express and tell them what is going on. They tell me I have to call a different number. Called it three times to get to different departmentsl First two say I have to send everything in. Third dept, which I tried twice, I get a recording saying no one was there to take my call

So now the blood pressure is up and I am just wondering WHAT NEXT

Over here American Express is one of the worst card company out and you cannot even talk to an English speaking person they all sound like Indians and hard to understand. emoticon

It is amazing how things like this just suck the life out of us and take time that we don't have to spare. How frustrating. You are doing so well dealing with all this.

BTW, thanks for stopping by on my blog. I'm glad I'm not going through all this thyroid stuff alone!

Knit knit knit knit knit knit knit...........that makes my day.

Good luck with this. They can't make you pay, I would write them a letter explaining your mom as pass on. I would photo copy the death cert. and last 0.00 balance. That should do it. After that don't worry yourself about it.

I agree with Kitt, if they want the money collected they need to go to heaven to have talk with her if they can..

I would not worry about this.....if they ever call tell them to call your Mom....really you don't have to pay this bill....there are statutes of limitations and death is the best reason.....let them figure it out....

I would ask for a copy of the charge they are trying to collect for. I would then send them all the year end statements with zeros. I would then say, "I understand that American Express is accepted in many locations, but I wasn't aware that it was accepted in heaven also." If you don't get anywhere, continue to go to the top!!! If that doesn't work, go to a news station. It seems to work for everyone else, it should work for you too!!!

that is horrible someone would do that but i also think it is horrible that companies do not seem to make it easy for us to take care of the problems either, have a glass of wine and get your knitting out, and try to forget about it till tomorrow, and i hope that the person who stole her id finds out one day what it feels like

That is so sad to hear.... Don't stop calling them stay on top of them. I don't even know if sending them a death certificate would work? So sad really it is......

God bless & take care.

Oh, hugs to you! My sister passed away in 2010 and she owed Dsicover card around $400. Since she died, they forgave it and we were all at peace with it. A couple of weeks ago we got a letter from Discover and they said that there had been some fraud going on with Discover and they were settling with customers and going to send us a check for over $300! Now that's a difference and in our favor! It makes you wonder what actually goes on in some of these companies!! emoticon Good luck to you!

Since she's deceased and you reported this to Amex, I would think they would have cancelled her card and dumped her from the ranks of those who could use her charge.

I'm not sure I would even worry about it any more. Maybe you should just be sure that you document thoroughly everything that you've done and attempted to contact since you heard from them...and then just forget it. Tell them where she's buried and maybe they can collect from her personally!!

Oh, I hate credit cards!!
