Gestational diabetes

Sunday, February 24, 2013

Well, my tests came back, and the doc thinks I have gestational diabetes. Yea. So I'm seeing a dietitian tomorrow. Also with the yea. I've been going through Sparkpeople's diabetes sections to learn more about this, and it doesn't have too much about gestational diabetes. I've been looking for stuff on type 2 diabetes tho, it's similar as far as I can tell. As far as I can tell, mostly what I need ti do is keep the sugar level even. Whcih for the most part doesn't seem to be too hard, except I don't do well with decent size breakfasts. I'm never all that hungry at breakfast time; it's not usually till lunch time or so. I don't know how to change that.
As far as I can tell, the diabetes thing isn't that different from a regular diet, at least not unless you need insulin, which as far as I can tell (from what the doc has said) I don't.
I'm not 100% certain I DO have the diabetes, because the first test was a few points over the normal (keep in mind that I also ate 2 hours before and I'm not sure if I had to fast or not.) So I couldn't do the normal 3 hour test, but that required an 8 hour fast first. I can't do it cause I get sick if I don't eat often enough. So they did the normal diabetes test, but that's not always accurate when someone's pregnant. The test came back high, but I guess only a little bit. Up until this point, there'd been no sugar in my urine (they do a test each time I go there) apparently there was "trace amounts" in my last test, so that's why the positive diagnosis.
So we'll see. Baby is still happy and heathy and active, so that's good. :) Wish me luck! I go to the diatician tomorrow!

I was diagnosed with GD recently, too. I wonder if they can tell based on your blood sugar levels after you eat (if they are having you test). The diet is pretty easy, luckily. Good luck!

Whole grains for breakfast, whole foods the rest of the day.

You are in the home stretch of the pregnancy. You'll be fine. Just do what you need to do.
