Oooh, can't decide - must get more details

Friday, February 22, 2013

Oh ... my ...

Just got an email about a race and I'm so tempted to register for this:

rhodyco.com/eab12k-2013.
html

Sausalito to San Francisco Emerald Across the Bay 12k

It's on my birthday.
It involves coming across the Golden Gate Bridge!
What's NOT to like?

Well, it isn't cheap. And it isn't in walking distance of home. I would have to have enough for the cost of the race ($50 plus online fee), but there's just no way to be in SF between 6:30 am and 8:00 am unless I spend the night there. A one-night stay might not be horribly expensive ... but it would be a Saturday night before St. Patrick's Day, so not sure how available hotel rooms would be. The longer I spend up there before and after, the more food and transportation costs add up.

Saturday and post-race Sunday in SF to celebrate birthday? Definite bonus.

Lots of hills? Well, I don't do terrible on them, but local races have mostly been flat.

It would also be only the second time I've gone further than 5k in a race. My only other one was the Turkey Trot 10k (which I did in about an hour and a half, so doing the 12k in under 2 hours sounds quite doable.) I have no doubt I can go that far, though my brisk walk ends up less brisk.

Obviously I need to get more details. Will I even have the spare cash to spend on myself for my birthday like that and is that what I want to spend it on?

Just one more thing to rattle around the brain cells that are already working long hours without overtime pay.

You only live once, so if you are even curious, even considering it, I say go for it!

First, how are you feeling? Anymore episodes? Keeping in mind your recent hospital stay, initially my response was going to be one geared toward frugality. But if anything, it should serve as a reminder of how we should truly LIVE. This event sounds like one you may regret missing. Since there is a concern about room availability, it may be wise to go ahead and reserve a room. It will give you a closer estimation of actual cost and give you a little more time to decide.

It sounds like a fabulous event and what a way to celebrate your birthday. I hope you are able to make it work. I'm considering the Hollywood Half Marathon in 2014. That would be a fun trip and a memorable event!

I say, if you can swing it financially, then go for it. How many times are you going to be able to do something like this on your birthday? I've never been to California so if you decide to do it, please let me live vicariously through you for race updates and your usual fantastic descriptions!

I was thinking of how you need a friend to stay with to cut costs.

Toss a coin - and if you say best of three you know what you really want.

Have a great day

It sounds like a blast! Is there a Spark Team for California or the SF area? Maybe someone on the team would let you crash on their couch for the night!

I say go for it. Sounds like it would be worth it to me. I was born in San Francisco but live in Ohio now for many years. As you go over the bridge...think how fortunate you are to live in such a lovely place!
