Pondering a New Goal

Thursday, February 21, 2013

What, me run another race? At my age?
I'm thinking of it.
Just by way of background, in my younger days I became an avid amateur runner, about the time I turned 40. I did all kinds of races and even completed six marathons. But lately the years have kept me from being able to run more than about a quarter mile at a time without getting strange pains in my lungs--a burning sensation. I can do aerobic step classes, zumba, and spinning without pain, but running is another story.
However...if I can increase my aerobic training and gradually build up my distance, maybe, just maybe, I can do another race. Even if I have to run/walk, it would be a goal worth pursuing, both for fitness and for my mental health.
Anyone want to join me?

I walk the Komen 5k I had to miss it last year we were away.
I really loved doing it. I too was athletic, my mother was a runner in demand for local teams but we were poor so she competed only when someone sponsored her.
I was a team player, Field hockey and I threw the javelin and discus that is why a Dr told me I had one "BOOB" bigger than the other of course I knew it and after such talk I never saw him again.
I am almost twice your age and I am sure if you have no issues with your lungs you can build up to it.
I can tell you I had the burning lungs when i walked up the hills on the School campus trails. I was checked out and Now I walk so much faster and I have not had that feeling for a long time now. Run walk would be good to get your lungs ready for the real thing, If you have had it checked you might do some conditioning and be able to do it in a while I hope so. HUGS Pat in Maine.
