A walk in the park with photos

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

On Monday hubby (Brian) & I went for a walk in a fairly new park that is close to our home.

The park is built on what used to be a sandstone quarry. Sandstone from the quarry provided stone for buildings, tombstones, houses and churches in Virginia and Washington, DC, including the Whitehouse, the Capitol Building, Gunston Hall, Christ Church in Alexandria, Virginia, Mount Airy in Richmond County, Virginia, and Aquia Church, in Stafford, Virginia, as well as steps and walkways at George Washington's Mount Vernon.

It was a bit chilly, but a beautiful walk. I look forward to going again when there are leaves on the trees (spring or summer) and in the fall when the leaves are changing colors.

A good portion of the trail is handicap accessible.

Brian:

A second bridge. There was a "no fishing" admonition posted at the front of the trail along with a bunch of other rules, but a man & his two children were fishing near this bridge. The two times that we walked over the bridge, they had caught a fish.

Overlooking Aquia Creek. The white images are birds:

Stones from the quarry:

Up close, you can actually see tool marks on this large section of rock. I took an up-close photo but it didn't turn out. Next time . . . .

On the trail:

More stones & boulders:

Lots of downed trees from recent storms:

A little woodpecker was having so much fun pecking the heck out of this tree:
