Hot in here tonight

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

The house is boiling hot. We cranked the wood stove up and didn't realize it was as warm as it was outside so now we're cooking. I love our warm wood heat and I freeze when I'm around another kind of heat but they say it's whatever you get used to. Wood heat is cozy. How do you heat your home.

Living just outside of DC it is hard to get the wood needed to run a whole house heating system like that. I have looked into it and if I wanted a wood stove as a backup I would need to install it at least 5' from our oil furnace. Unfortunately that would require some significant remodeling in the basement as well as moving the water heater. So for now we are an oil heated home at a cost of around $1400 per year.

We keep the thermostat down to 62. We are crazy. Lots of sweaters and blankets.

Gas furnace here which never heats the entire house. Depending on which room I am in I can be cozy warm or ...FREEZING.

We've headed solely with wood since '77. Love it & wouldn't have it any other way. We cut, split & stack our own wood - don't buy it. We've saved untold thousands of dollars in heating bills over the years. And...we're as warm as can be - no matter how cold it is outside. emoticon

My dad has a wood-burning furnace in Michigan, but we live in Arkansas so we have an "all electric" house. It's funny how much cheaper electricity is here than in Michigan. I really like wood heat too, but I'm sorry you are boiling!

emoticon we heat with propane -my house is always on cold side. We also have a wood burning fireplace but we only use it when we're home on the weekends.
