What a week!

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

As many of you already know my FIL passed away Feb 20 and last week was a very draining week emotionally, so much so that I did not even have the energy or desire to be online much. The kids were upset and we were trying to get everything set up to link to the memorial service in South Africa ( since there are more family here in Canada now than there are left in South Africa)
It was frustrating at first to try get it done since the family over there didn't think it could be done! SIGH!!!! So we hired a dear friend of mine ( who also used to be my boss at the restaurant for many years) and he took care of it all! He used "facetime" to link us up live to the memorial service and on this side our church set up a lovely intimate and private breakfast for us while we listened in on the service in SA. It was at 7:30 am here since it was in the afternoon in SA.

Here is a photo:

We set up a memorial table with photos of "grandpa" and his grand-kids:

I got to keep those beautiful roses!

After the service I gave each framed print to each family. My DH has a brother and sister here in Canada, So they each got their photo with grandpa. Our is up on our wall in a special place.

Thankfully what made it a little easier to break the news about grandpa was to be able to say that Granny was coming over to visit us this summer and that they would see her.

Yesterday was Family day and so we got together with the cousins and went walking on the frozen lake and the kids skated - I was FAR too cold and had the job of lacing up skates etc so by the time they were happily skating my fingers were frozen.

We had hot chocolate together afterwards and they stayed for pizza dinner.

I must admit this last week we have been having comfort food, but on Sunday night we had turkey meatloaf and mashed cauliflower and it was DELICIOUS!!! I had heard about it being a great substitute for mashed potato and it really is. Anyway back to healthy eating this week and my energy is slowly returning after quite and emotional and draining week.

Thank you to all those that left goodies and sent messages of love and condolences! Thanks!

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family! If the kids are still stressed, take a walk with them and talk about nice memories of Grandpa.

And what a great idea to use Facetime to link to a faraway service! I'll remember that in case I should need it someday!
