Mirrors At The YMCA

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

I started a new exercise the other day, that my physical therapist keeps telling me I'm doing wrong. (I believe her; my body just hasn't figured out yet how to do it.)

At any rate, I went over to the mirror wall for the first time, to watch myself do the exercise, and I discovered two things. First, the mirror can't help me with the exercise since I need to see myself from the back.

Second, no one need worry about people watching them because of the mirrors. The great majority of the people around the mirrors are totally focused on themselves. In fact, most of them are so self-absorbed that they don't even notice that they're blocking access to huge amounts of equipment.

Basically, the safest strategy to being ignored at the YMCA is to be close to the mirrors but not blocking equipment, you're not using.

Being obese, I was scared to go to the gym - memories of high school mockery, etc. I started going to the Y and was delighted. They had a strong policy that everyone feel safe and respected, for one thing; but even without that I found myself to be more or less invisible - for exactly the reason you observe; everyone is focussed on themselves. I came to see it as a safe, quiet, personal place where I too could focus on me. Of course some folks are preening in front of the mirrors, human nature being what it is.

emoticon I always say te mirrors at my gym make me look thinner !! emoticon
Not ton of people there & we are all very respectful of each other, and move if necessary, or try to stand back, but still be able to see in the mirror.
We usually have older people there when we are there, and they are more respectful of others than the younger ones are. emoticon

    PAM BWS,

Because I'm so skinny, now, if I turn sideways to the mirror, I can't see myself, at all.

Yeah, right!

(I think my nose just grew 6 inches. Hope it doesn't add to my weight.)

If you turn sideways to the mirror, does it help you to 'see' part of your back.

I find it rather amusing to watch the YMCA dudes admire themselves in the mirror while I am on the treadmill. emoticon
