Does anyone else do GROUPINGS?

I have rarely used the groupings in the nutrition tracker. I have used it for my oatmeal breakfast and mostly just to keep track of my individual snacks or meals.

Spark was asking for verification for some of the entries. It was only then that I realized there were so many discrepancies in using number from others.

I tried to use the recipe calculator for my soups and stews and my oddball recipes only I and DH love. Almost every time my recipes went out to the site and I just did not want to post to the recipes because there are so many negatives and I am certain all of mine would be criticized as bland or blah, so I gave up on the recipe calculator it took me too long and it was too difficult me being a very slow typist.

I have been making GROUPINGS and I find them to be my best bet yet. With soups and stews that I make regularly I have started to weigh and measure the ingredient. I now know the ounces for carrots and how much I want for exactly 4 servings, everything I put in there has been weighed and gets divided by the number which is for 2 of us 4 servings.

I have many vegetables I like to put in my soups and stews so I go to the grouping and select the beef stew grouping and all of it goes to the tracker. Thanks to the nice “remove” button I can edit in the tracker and not in the grouping.

DH and I know just what vegetables we like and which meats we like. Now I have CHICKEN, BEEF and PORK stew in there and so far it works like a charm. It took a while to set up but now it is getting faster and I have more to add.

I also have sandwich fixings in there. I rarely eat bread but DH always likes his Arnold whole wheat, butter or peanut butter, lettuce, bacon, tomato and I just put the group in and remove what I do not want. I use Romaine lettuce instead of bread

That said I am happy that my tracker has our most popular selections right in there.
I have to tell you, we like to do MacDonald's when we are traveling and so I have the MacDonald's grouping too.

Most are served for me with no bun so that way it is not the same numbers on their place-mats or posters it is my numbers from their website and it really does go faster there too.

Just had to share another tool I am using often Pat in Maine.

    I haven't used the groupings but I do copy from one day to the next. Also, you can add you recipes to get the calculations but just make sure to check that you don't what to share. I have done that with a number of mine that are just things that I like.

    Thanks for the tip. Guess I'll have to give it a try. I have my oatmeal several times a week with the same indgredients. It would be easier to group, then copy all of the time-I think. I've typed recipes in too and don't know where they went-out in cyberspace somewhere. Not helpful when you want to use the same recipe or meal!

    wowee..since my diet almost always is veggies and i weigh and measure my servings always i fast track only the friut and veggies and count carbs for the insulin injections

    I also use the groupings. I use them for my routine "eat together" items like my regular lunch salad of spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots and feta cheese. It is so much easier to push one button and get all of it into the nutrition tracker.

    I don't use the groupings, but am glad it works for you!

    Hope all is well for you and DH! Currently having wintry weather after our 44 degrees yesterday. The temp dropped as rain moved in . . . lots of rain. As the temp got down to 20, of course, it changed to freezing rain adn then snow. The winds have been howling (still are) and the snow is falling and blowing . . . I don't think it will be significant # of inches, but enough to make a frozen mess out there. Spring . . . 30 more days!

    I definitely use groupings! It's so much easier to enter an entire recipe serving that I eat on a regular basis, instead of having to enter the ingredients one by one every time I eat the dish! I also eat the exact same breakfast every day, so that is in a grouping as well, titled "breakfast" (1.25 c Cheerios, 1/2 c 1% milk, 6 oz orange juice). Hope this helps

    I used it for most of my breakfasts - I really only vary on three or four different ones - and my "go to" lunch on the days that I work. I really like the ease of it!

    I have used groupings Pat...
    I use them for things that I make the same way every time I do them...such as my chicken salad.
    When I track it...I take that group....put it into my tracker and then if I had MORE chicken then in the *group* lets say----I add the extra amount into the tracker separately----
    The * groupings * saves a LOT of time repeating yourself...

    I use the groupings for a few meals but for the most part I use it the way you do. For example cornbread muffins; off the top of my head have 1 serving jiffy mix .06 cup almond milk and .04 cup vegetable oil. Whatever it is I had my husband do the math once now I just click the group!

    I have used groupings mostly for my breakfast items, but I also like your idea of putting combinations of foods for other meals, I'm going to try that.

    I do use the recipe calculator, but keep most of my recipes private so that I am the only one to see them.

    I hear there is another big storm coming tonight, is it forecast for your area also. Oh well we are getting closer to spring everyday. This too shall pass.

    I use the groupings mostly fro breakfast and lunches, as I have a few favorites I have often.

    For those of you who struggle with setting up your groupings, or entering your own recipes, I encourage you to stay with it, because is is SO worth it when you have it all set up! It takes some time, so what I did was to enter one or two family favorites as I made the recipe. Usually while things are cooking there are a few minutes to make those entries, and eventually you will have all of your favorites entered! Even if you only do one a week . . . . it is worth the effort because it makes tracking so much easier, the easier it is to track, the more you will track, the more success you will have!

    I, like Pat, do not share my home recipes on SP. They are special only to me, and I am not looking for any comments about them.

    I use GROUPINGS for just a few things, but overall, I love the tracker! I tried WW's & I like SP's better. Just personal preference, is all...

    And I don't mind "estimating" sometimes, cause I'm not gonna sweat the small stuff! You're doing a fine job Pat! Keep up the great work!!!

    When I use the tracker I do have some things in the groupings section but with my food, a LOT of ingredients/items are not listed in the Spark People database and there are no nutrition labels on the food products here.

    The Tracker is very hard for me to use. I need to get help with it. I try to put food in the best I can. Glad that it is working out good for You Pat. No I do not use the Groupings either.     I haven't tried the groupings and seldom track my calories anymore. It just takes too much time. I've only got a few pounds to lose and I eat really healthy most of the time.

    I bought two boxes of chocolate covered cherries and eat one every afternoon. Except yesterday I ate two and the second one wasn't as good as the first one so now I am back to my one a day until the second box is gone and then I won't buy anymore for another four years.

    emoticon You are doing a fantastic job with the trackers. I took one look...and decided I didn't have the time to learn about it right now. When actually it probably would be the best thing I could do for myself.

    The storm you had with lots of snow then the sideways snow? We are at the very high winds and whiteout stage, with drifting snow. Nice to stay inside and curl up in a comfy chair Reading and watching TV. While the chicken is simmering and the vegetables have been added...the house smells wonderful.

    So glad the tracker is working for you. Wish me luck...I may try again soon.
    As always, in this type weather, keep warm and dry.

    Yes, I use Groupings for things like Oatmeal which I add a lot of stuff to, and at our Favorite Restaurants I will make the Combos that I always get into a Grouping.

    emoticon Of course sometimes the Tracker doesn't have everything that the Restaurant serves, so to get a fairly 'accurate' Guesstimate of what I ate, it might look like I went to the Olive Garden, Red Lobster, and Johnny Carinos in the same Meal, LOL!!

    It's a lot easier than entering the recipe. It's an extrememly powerful way to enter an often eaten food combination ... like your got to breakfasts.

    Yes, I use the food grouping tool and find it so fast and easy for entering most of my foods. It seems to make the most sense to me. I have entered my own recipes as I too measure out everything when I'm at home. Grouping is a great tool! emoticon
