I need a new start to 2013! (vent)

Monday, February 18, 2013

***Disclaimer*** I know I usually list my blessings. I still see my blessings every day and appreciate all the good things in my life. There is still more good than bad. However....

2013 is not starting well for me. I need a new start with different results. DH and I sat down in December and realized that our debt was barely under control. Being responsible people, we sat down and created a budget for 2013 to reduce our debt. We cannot erase it in one year, but we can reduce it. Our plan was realistic, specific, measurable, and something we could live with comfortably. So, in the first three weeks of 2013, both children ended up in the hospital needing several tests. My son actually had tests done at two different hospitals. (We stil have not solved his medical problems, but have decided to wait before doing any more tests.) And our car broke down. We have one car and it cost $1100 to fix the four problems. The medical bills after insurance total close to $2000, I think. My problem with the medical bills is that no one knows how many bills I should expect. The hospitals send individual bills, the doctors each send an individual bills, the techs running the tests send individual bills, the doctors reading the tests send individual bills, the lab sent an individual bill. I have absolutely no idea how many bills to expect. The hospitals can't tell me how many bills to expect, insurance can't tell me how many to expect. I thought I had them all and I made payment plans. Guess what? Yesterday another bill showed up!?!?! I can see how insurance fraud is so easy. I had one doctor who sent my daughter to another doctor. Then the first doctor came back to check on her and charged us for a second visit! Yes, they can do that. To make matters even more fun, the insurance company had the wrong information about my daughter and kept denying her claims. It took me two weeks and three phone calls to fix that problem. Now my son is very sick again. I am trying to wait to take him to the doctor, but if he is not feeling better tomorrow, I will have to take him.

The washing machine broke in January. It was 15 years old and we were able to get a great deal on a new one. However, we had to put $235 of it on credit. We are in the middle of paying for braces and my daughter may need braces by the end of the year. It feels like it never ends.

As I sat down to do my bills at the beginning of the month, I realized that while some of the credit card debt has gone down, we have actually added over $3000 to our debt. Now I need to look at the budget again and see if it is possible to reduce our debt by our original plan plus $3000 or if we just try to pay down the $3000 I created in the first three weeks of 2013. We already had plans for our taxes, now that may have to change.

I need a change (and some prayers). Thanks for listening.

So sorry for all of your troubles. That was me last year after breaking my knee and wrist and over two months of being either in the hospital or the rehab center. About insurance. Those who send you the bills do not expect you to pay them right away until after they are first paid by insurance. Get on your page on the insurance site. You can see the bills as they are pending before insurance pays. If they pay 70%, then they will tell you how much you owe. You pay only that much. When all the bits and pieces you pay add up to $2000 then the insurance will pay all of the rest of the bills. Those sending the bills do not expect you to pay before they have heard back from the insurance company. They send out a first bill....then another when they know how much is your responsibility. Make sure that each place has your insurance info though. I still have a Radiology company who keeps sending their bills to the wrong place. Dec. 3rd I had my last xrays and that bill still has not shown up on my insurance site nor have I received the bill. I figure again they sent it to the wrong place and I'm just waiting to have to call them again.

By the way.... I had SIX surgeries and was at two hospitals plus the rehab center so my bills came in from all over, even though I was just one person, not a family.

Take Courage. Trust the Lord to help you.

I think most of us have been in similar situations at one time or another. You can only do what you can and eventually it will all get sorted. Of course your son's health is a priority. You may have to arrange for a payment plan with the doctor bills. The hospital may have a person who can emoticon help you with that. Deep breath. It will work out.

I understand your frustrations. We would be in great shape financially if it weren't for unexpected medical bills that never seem to end. Guess I should be anticipating them by now. God will provide. He never allows us to endure more than we can handle. Use this as an opportunity to grow your faith.

Money problems are so stressful. I'm working really hard to pay down my debt. My child support ends in May and I brought a lot of debt from my first marriage (not sure why I'm paying it all). My husband has 2 kids in college and my son goes to college in the fall. Something always comes up. If it's for your kid's health it's what you have to do. Sending you prayers that things turn around for you.

I "feel you." We are in a similar boat. Lucky for us my husband has a HSA that he puts money into, pretaxed, every month. This has saved us so many times, in the area of hospital bills, dental expenses, braces, copays, etc.

We had to put a new roof on and get a new furnice/air conditioner in the same year. So there is part of our debt. I could go on, but you get the picture. Oh, and our oldest starts college next year, but she already knows that she'll have to take out personal loans and student loans. emoticon We just don't have the funds to pay for college and feed the other kids at home.

What we are doing is paying off all the "little bills" and then concentrating on the large credit card bill. It is so frustrating!! I'm working a small part time job and will work a second job this summer.

Hang in there. emoticon

This is very frustrating for you I know. Just keep moving forward the best you can and it will get better. Find out what is wrong with your son. That is a priority. Talk to your creditors and see if you can make other arrangements for payments. And take a deep breath!

Being a grwon up sucks some times. It will be hard but you will be able to do it. Try your hardest not to add anymore debt this year and you will get it done. As for the medical bills. Put them on the back burner for now. Take your son to the DR and find out what is going on with him, The medical bills will be the same in a year as they are today. They don't charge interest. Take your time and keep your head up. Best of luck....

Awww, sweetie, definitely hugs and prayers. It is so nerve wracking to be dealing with illness, but even more when it's our kiddos. Then to add to that the utter frustration of dealing with insurance and bills. I feel for you. So sorry things are going badly. It is troubling when you have a budget in place and things beyond our control happen.

Wishing you blessings, dear.
