***Disclaimer*** I know I usually list my blessings. I still see my blessings every day and appreciate all the good things in my life. There is still more good than bad. However....
2013 is not starting well for me. I need a new start with different results. DH and I sat down in December and realized that our debt was barely under control. Being responsible people, we sat down and created a budget for 2013 to reduce our debt. We cannot erase it in one year, but we can reduce it. Our plan was realistic, specific, measurable, and something we could live with comfortably. So, in the first three weeks of 2013, both children ended up in the hospital needing several tests. My son actually had tests done at two different hospitals. (We stil have not solved his medical problems, but have decided to wait before doing any more tests.) And our car broke down. We have one car and it cost $1100 to fix the four problems. The medical bills after insurance total close to $2000, I think. My problem with the medical bills is that no one knows how many bills I should expect. The hospitals send individual bills, the doctors each send an individual bills, the techs running the tests send individual bills, the doctors reading the tests send individual bills, the lab sent an individual bill. I have absolutely no idea how many bills to expect. The hospitals can't tell me how many bills to expect, insurance can't tell me how many to expect. I thought I had them all and I made payment plans. Guess what? Yesterday another bill showed up!?!?! I can see how insurance fraud is so easy. I had one doctor who sent my daughter to another doctor. Then the first doctor came back to check on her and charged us for a second visit! Yes, they can do that. To make matters even more fun, the insurance company had the wrong information about my daughter and kept denying her claims. It took me two weeks and three phone calls to fix that problem. Now my son is very sick again. I am trying to wait to take him to the doctor, but if he is not feeling better tomorrow, I will have to take him.
The washing machine broke in January. It was 15 years old and we were able to get a great deal on a new one. However, we had to put $235 of it on credit. We are in the middle of paying for braces and my daughter may need braces by the end of the year. It feels like it never ends.
As I sat down to do my bills at the beginning of the month, I realized that while some of the credit card debt has gone down, we have actually added over $3000 to our debt. Now I need to look at the budget again and see if it is possible to reduce our debt by our original plan plus $3000 or if we just try to pay down the $3000 I created in the first three weeks of 2013. We already had plans for our taxes, now that may have to change.
I need a change (and some prayers). Thanks for listening.
