I am Mona. I am an middle-aged lady that is overweight and had gotten tired of being unfit. You see, I work for DuPont and for most of my career, I worked in the factory. I kept fit by hard work and my weight was proportionate to my 5'9" height. Then as I was able to change jobs, I got less and less active. Now I have a great job there as a Technical assistant to an Engineer, but I sit at a desk most of the day. So over the years I had gotten to 244 pounds! I was sluggish and did not feel like doing much after my work-day was over.I ate whatever I wanted. I seperated from my husband and moved back to my own home (which I had kept). I have sleep apnea and my blood pressure was borderline. I have 3 older sisters and all 3 have diabetes.I knew I had to do something.
The real motivator was when I travelled to Italy and Greece last year. I went with my friend Brenda, 5 years older than me. Well ya'll, she showed me up!She out-walked me, out-climbed me and out-stairclimbed me. We visited the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, which I really wanted to see. There were LITERALLY eight flights of stairs to the galleries!! I managed to get up there, but I thought I was gonna have a heart attack! It was worth it to see Botticelli's "Birth of Venus" and his "Printemps". Also, many works by DaVinci and Michaelangelo. But I wished I had been more fit.
When we visited Athens and I couldn't climb to the top of the Acropolis, I wished I had been more fit. When we climbed steep passageways in Santorini, I wish I had been more fit. When I met a sexy Greek jeweler in Mykonos, I wish I have been THINNER ;)
So last Fall, my new journey was to become more fit and thinner. I started with my friend Rose going to Zumba classes. We sure danced like old white women LOL. But Esther, our instructor, encouraged us to just move as well as we could. We did it once a week In October and I lost 4 pounds. Then Rose and I decided to join a gym. We toured the couple in our area and decided on Gold's Gym. The price is reasonable and Esther even offers Zumba there. We tried Cardio and Circuit training on our own, but soon realized we didn't really know what to do. So we hired a Trainer through Compel Fitness (at the Gym) for 4 sessions a month for 3 months.This has been" working out" well for us! It has tested our strength limits and stamina. I have hated my trainer and loved him. It has given results. Next week is our final week. I am down to 224, which means I have lost 20 pounds since October 1st. I have lost inches off my waist, hips and arms.I have a looong way to go t reach my goal of 175 lbs. But I have reached fitness goals. I can climb a flight of stairs more easily. I can walk the half-mile into work without losing my breath. I can ALMOST touch my toes! And I can do 25 squats :)
So soon we will be on our own for strengh training. We have learned so much that I believe we will be able to keep it up on our own.
My next journey is a trip to the Hawaiian Islands in May. Brenda and I are going to Oahu, Maui and Kauii for over 2 weeks. I sure hope Brenda can keep up with ME this time!
