Commercial Hot Links? Not So Hot, Spark People

Sunday, February 17, 2013

I'm noticing that my Botox blog yesterday has had hot links gratuitously added to commercial sponsors/advertisers not of course courtesy of me. And so too some of the comments, which I'm pretty sure aren't courtesy of the commenters.

Wrinkle cream, wrinkles, Botox, weight loss, fitness, Spark People, Weight Watchers, Green Giant, Zulily, workout, gym, calorie counter, fitness tracker, nutrition tracker, message boards: lets just see how many hot links attach themselves.

Feeling high-jacked? Questioning whether the Spark People site's professed service orientation is being overtaken by a commercial imperative?

I love Spark People. I appreciate Spark People. It's a marvellous community. And I get that sponsors keep the site free. But: how much profit is enough profit? Profit binge behaviour alert?

And besides: aren't these my blogs?

My gratitude remains intact but maybe I'm having trouble with "maintenance". Maybe that gratitude is not quite so fervent.

I don't see any ads either.

Are you on Firefox full time? Erased the other browsers?

I tend to mentally block out all the adds. Sometimes they are more aggressive than others. I wasn't bothered by any pop ups while reading your previous blog.

I don't see any ads on your blog at all. Like Slenderella, I did notice things come up after searching the internet for a product but, so far, it hasn't extended to Spark.

I'm not seeing what you are talking about either. However, a couple weeks ago I was searching the internet (Google) for a windbreaker with hood to run in when needed. Then on SP I kept getting ads for jackets. I thought that was kind of spooky. And tonight my computer just seemed to be running really slow when I tried to enter my food in the tracker. Maybe that slowness is due to pop up blocking. I don't really know.

Anyway, hope you figure out how to maneuver aroundor block the annoyances. SP is a great site. May it stay free and continue to work well forever!!

I am not getting these you are talking of. Right now, all I see is Coach Nicole's Total Body Sculpting which slides down the page with me as I scroll down your page to leave a comment. It doesn't pop up or interfere with anything.
Brain Training games is in your upper right corner of your pink page, and just above it is an ad is your body toxic, none of them doing anything except sitting there. Just below the brain games, a tiny message advertisers keep our website free as if we need the reminder..
Its unfortunate there has to be so many. It would be better if they kept them off our personal pages at least. I have noticed the ads seem to be tailored to what you are looking at -arthritis ads in my RA team, etc.
I am sure if we complained what they would do is offer a premium service of no ads for a fee -I know of other sites that have done that. So the question is do we want to put up with this, or pay a monthly fee to get rid of them. It may come to that.
Hope you have a great Sunday -there are no ads in my house :) No TV, No newspapers, no radio. Commercial free simple living at its best.

I have many filters and add-ons to block these ads, as well as all of the various trackers that are trying to follow my every move. I find it immensely annoying, and it really slows down the performance of our computers - not to mention all the spy-ware and mal-ware it installs on your computer without your permission or knowledge! Like everything else, you've got to take measures into your own hands to protect yourself and your computer.

Sigh. My current complaint is with the old desktop the popups make it so slow that it dies. I'm not sparking as much, due to this.

My filter must be working very well. I don't see any popups, but I understand how annoying they can be.

Hmm... this is the second blog I've read about this recently. Not good... I love SparkPeople, but I agree, that part is not positive. I wonder if they know how people feel about this.

I think my computer blocks out those pop ups. I just went to your blog and saw only one on the top for chakra. It is frustrating to deal with those extra ads. Have you tried blocking pop ups?
