My journey so far, and some of the next stops on the way

Saturday, February 16, 2013

One of the assignments for the 5% Winter to Spring challenge I joined today is to list all the reasons I want to lose weight, what do I want to change, how do I want to look, how do I want to feel, what things will I be able to do in the future with a slimmer healthier body? And list all the OTHER things that I want to change!

So, some of this I already put on my Sparkpage when I became active again on SP in December after 4 years off. But I should restate some of it, and expand it a bit....so 5 years ago, when I joined originally, I was overweight, stressed, unhappy and SP helped me meet weight loss goals, but I didn't really "buy in" totally, so I soon fell back off the wagon. I hadn't really changed anything, and still didn't have a healthy lifestyle. Back then, I never really joined in the SP community, didn't even ever set up a Sparkpage, so that's one of the things I determined to do differently this time, and why I'm expanding now on how I got here and where I want to go next on this journey.

This fall, I realized that I had to take charge of this, I was heavier than ever before in my life, and could no longer do the physical activities I used to do and enjoy. A walk up a flight of stairs made me pant, and walking much made my feet hurt and made me tired. So, I decided this was NOT how I wanted to live anymore, I had ordered some Zumba disks so I could start to exercise...it looked fun in the ads, and I figured I could take it with me when I travel. I travel quite a bit in my job, and that was one of the "excuses" why I had gotten so out of shape, and dowright FAT. I figured if I could only learn to do it, I could carry it with me and play on my laptop in hotel rooms. And that if I only got some exercise, it would all get better. So, this I did, and although it took me purely forever (or at least it seemed like it), I learned it and got where I could actually do the full disk without pausing to pant and recover, first a 40 minute one, then a 60 minute one! Amazing...I had better stamina and energy, and I even took my disks and did Zumba 3 times a week on a 10 day cruise my husband and I took in late November. Somehow, during that trip, I let someone take some pictures of us on a beach. OMG, I knew it was bad and that my clothing size had increased from an 8 to a 16, but we both looked so bad and unhealthy, I never NEVER want to see another picture of me like that again, and I refuse to hide from cameras.

So, while I had met my goal on that trip to stay at the same weight and not gain any more, but I obviously needed more than that, so I decided I needed to get serious....When we got back home, I re-activated my SP account, and determined to do things differently this time to make permanent lifestyle changes and become a healthier, happier me.

I think it's serendipity that the day I reactivated, reset my goals, meal plans, weighed in, etc. was the precise 5 year anniversary of my first joining SP in 2007!

Bottom line, this time, I will do it right, andit won't be a temporary weight loss. It IS hard to find time to plan healthy meals, shop for food, and cook. It IS hard to eat healthy when I am in airports and hotels. It IS hard to find time and be committed to exercising properly. BUT I WILL DO ALL THESE THINGS. And I will change all the bad habits that got me where I was.

You can see from my tracker that I've been losing 1 to 2 pounds a week consistently since I reset goals. My goal weight should be attainable by June 2013. I'm increasing my fitness level by continuing with Zumba, walking, and doing strength training using SP videos. The January Jumpstart challenge gave me a great introduction to the videos, and pointed out to me the areas I needed to do the most work in. I made some Sparkfriends with similar goals, and we encourage each other. The February Bootcamp is a continuation of the January Jumpstart to me...keeps me doing the strength training. I started the 5K for Rookies program, finished Week 1, and am signed up for a 5K race in mid-April. (Already paid the entrance fee, and it's sponsored by work and people there know it, so no backing out!) I'm committed to all these things this time, and it's working...I know this works, and how amazing will it be when in another 7 weeks I can RUN a 5K race, when I couldn't hardly walk that far 3 months ago!

Today, I found the 5% Winter to Summer challenge and it sounded like a whole lot of fun, and a good way to keep accountable to my goals, and to get to know more SP members. I don't yet know my team assignment, but I know it will be awesome, and we'll be able to fly around the world!!

I WILL enjoy my life, and be healthy so I can do the things I enjoy.
I WILL NOT hide from cameras while I'm doing them!
I WILL feel good, and sleep well.
I WILL be an example that I can be proud of to people that I know.
I WILL be around to enjoy my grandsons grow up, and be able to take them hiking, camping, and fishing.

So, this was a long way around the pole barn, but this is my journey so far, and where I plan to go from here.

P.S. I just found out I'm to be on the Awesome A Team for the Winter to Spring 5% Challenge. WooHoo!
