READ that label!!!

Saturday, February 16, 2013

My friend Glenda struggles with a variety of health issues and is only recently back up walking (some) with a walker. She struggles with pain a lot! While she was in a rehab place, she was struggling with her stomach due to the weird menu (and awful food) at the center. I suggested she try probiotics and purchased a bottle of Swanson brand probiotics for her. They helped a lot. To my surprise, they also helped with her pain issues.

Recently, she ran out of the Swanson brand, and her daughter purchased another brand found in the grocery store. The label SAID probiotics. She took one a day for a week or so...pain levels went up and her stomach issues returned. She took several pills a day..still no results. When I heard of this, I found another bottle (unopened) of the Swanson brand in my cabinet and hurried it to her. I hate knowing my friend is hurting and I have something that would help...at my house instead of hers! I delivered them around noon yesterday.

Today she called me to let me know her stomach was better and the pain levels were decreased already...she had expected it to take more than 24 hrs. She had also compared the labels on the two bottles. The brand purchased in the grocery had NO probiotics in it...just a variety of vitamins and minerals..some of which some people should not be taking randomly...like iodine.

I made a similar error in not reading labels...with Aloe. I had read that Aloe helps with blood sugar..but I was only taking 25-50 mg a day. Not enough. I purchased another brand...higher dose and took several. Aloe is supposed to be SO good for you. I had er...upset stomach...for two days. Investigated online and learned that there is aloe vera gel and aloe vera that has gel and latex. That second one will cause diarrhea...and can cause dependency if taken for more than a week or so. In my case, I didn't do the investigation first...not knowing that there are different forms of Aloe and having always heard how good for you and healing aloe is.

The bottom line? RESEARCH first...and READ THE LABEL You might be very surprised!

Research is key! Even if the label tells you it has something in it that you are wanting, knowing if it has the PROPER variant of it is so vital!

Your example with the probiotics, or even the aloe, show this very well.

Recently I was researching niacin supplements and discovered that many easy to find types are made of the version known as niacinamide. This is almost an inert form of niacin, meaning it will do very little of what true niacin will do! So many manufacturers are only out to spend as little as possible in making their products and increasing their profits and have no real concern for the people buying those products. In fact, many count on their customers being too dumb to know what they are really getting! Sad world.

Really looking forward to the day when this sort of thing will all be gone and we will no longer need to know all this stuff because we will all have perfect health! :)

That is amazing and yes it is sometimes VITAL to check the label. My mother was sick once and I went to the pharmacy explained her age, her symptoms and her allergies and took home the suggested meds. Got home, opened the bottle, took out the label and read NOT FOR PREGNANT WOMEN OR THE ELDERLY. What is with that negligent pharmacist????
Lucky for me I read the label.
