Perfect Connections

Saturday, February 16, 2013

My church is participating in a great program for Lent. We have weekly written information but we can also make that online connection. The program is called Lent 4.5 and is based on Christian simplicity. This weeks focus? Our relationship with food!! The subtitle is "Mindful Eating Connects Us To The Gift of Food. How perfect. This week's practice is considering eating habits. It makes the connection about our eating habits and how it affects the rest of the world.

This is from this week's lesson, "Our food choices can make a difference to those living with hunger daily. Our meat-based Western diet has profound ramifications on our earth’s health as well as in relation to world production. We use more than two thirds of all cereal grain production in the country to feed animals. Much of that same grain could feed people at a much more efficient rate. Imagine also that half of all water, a full 80% of all agricultural land, and nearly a third of all fossil fuels produced in the U.S. are invested in raising farm animals."

Those thoughts should stop us in our tracks. There are links to additional information and video. The program then gives action steps that can be taken. It is a wonderful program and available to anyone with an interest.

The timing is perfect for me as I opted to begin the Mayo Clinic Pyramid Diet. The first 2 weeks are focused on habits. I love that I can tie this all together.

And, I know my Spark Friends are there with me.

I am shamed by how much of the world's resources we consume, truly without a second's thought to the struggle of the rest of the world's population. When traveling we try very hard not to be "ugly" Americans. Thank you for sharing the link.

I have not heard of the Mayo Clinic's pyramid diet but have a great deal of respect for the Mayo since they were the only people who were able to diagnose my dad's very rare cancer.

What a beautiful Lenten program. Now only if all the nations and politicians of the world did this. It is wonderful when things come together. I hope you will share some of your insights and actions with us.

Love this. Via a very different path, I've become recently similarly aware of all that goes into our food production, and as I drive about our area with all it's dairies, ranches, etc., sometimes in puzzled wonder at all of the 'costs' that represents to the larger 'community.'

Wonderful to have all that integrated. You always inspire me to think deeper and look for interrelationships. And I love how you stretch and try new things. Thank you for passing this on.
