Dear Fat Girl At The Gym,

Yes, it's me, the skinny bit... uh, girl on the cardio machine next to you. I see you glancing over at me and I know what you're thinking.

How could I possibly know what you're thinking? Because I haven't always been the skinny girl at the gym. I was in your shoes when I started.

Evidence? No, there's not much evidence, other than my clothes that have gotten too big. There are definitely no photos, because I had become the floating head in them. Hiding behind people, chairs, tables, anything really. So you pretty much have to take my word for it that I was heavy. Unless you want a doctor's note? One that says my BMI was in the overweight category, one that says how many times I was advised to lose weight, would that help?

My cutesy matching outfit? It came together by accident, it really did. I got the shirt as a gift. I found the matching pants months later at a discount store. I'm surprised the colors match since I've washed the shirt WAY more times than the pants.

Back when I first started working out I wore pretty much what you have on: an old t-shirt and sweat pants. Just so you know, it's the starters workout uniform. Once you make working out a habit, you'll find yourself asking for workout clothes for birthday and Christmas gifts. Your real friends will get what you ask for. Be wary of the ones who don't. Don't worry too much about building a workout wardrobe right now, once you start to see the numbers on the scale move down you'll be motivated to try on actual workout clothes. They're the main reason why you don't see much sweat on me, the moisture wicking fabric is awesome that way. Trust me, I'm sweating, too.

I wish you would stop glancing over and just start a conversation with me already. I'm not stuck up at all. I could be your biggest cheerleader. I'm full of real advice, things that really work, only if you work them. (Have you heard of SparkPeople?) I'm not going to lie and tell you it's easy, it's not. Seeing you at the gym regularly let's me know you're not afraid of hard work.

I hope we talk soon. Whenever you're ready. I'll be on the machine next to you.

A former fat girl,
Dee

Um, could YOU try talking to her first? I know that's an innovation, but your story could be an inspiration to her.

what´s to stop you from being the first one to talk.you never know thatt might be the turning point in that persons life who is working out next to you.it might make the differance from her coming to the gym again or staying at home because she feels out of place.just a thought.great blog though. emoticon

Great letter!! I think most (fat ) people may have mis conception about skinny girl. Since they are fat, so they may be envy about beautiful skinny girl or just believe skinny girls are mean and nothing to do with them. At the gym I haven't wear active sports wear. And I don't have nice matching work out clothes yet. But I hope I can wear them in near future. I am working my way up to be the skinny bi... But I know how you feel at gym About fat girl glancing at you.

I am like you but worst. I have started from my BMI at "Obese"and lost quite a good amount of weight. But still I am in over weight as of now. But I look small, and even here in spark people, I had made a great friendship to couple of girls much bigger then me. but after, I posted my picture, I feel kinda got cold shoulder from that person. It makes me feel sad. Because I can be her best friends and good supporter of her loosing weight. I am a good hearted person regardless of my size. My size may change but my heart doesn't change... Thanks for this letter, many people should read this letter.

Awesome post! When I've been at my thinnest I try to always cheer on the people who need cheering! You never know what's inside a person--can't judge a book by it's cover, after all..... :)

Wow! Why do we assume that that skinny girl has always been that way! This was an eye opener as I am the fat one in the sweat pants. You are right. That skinny girl could add the encouragement that I need. You've opened my eyes. Thank you.
