IBS?

Saturday, February 16, 2013

I've been having abdominal pain a lot lately, which intensifies during exercise. I saw one doctor who diagnosed it as "benign abdominal wall muscle pain" and said I just have to wait it out until it heals. I saw a second doctor who said he could feel my intestines were inflamed and diagnosed me with spastic colon/IBS.

He gave me a smooth muscle muscle relaxant which really helped but also knocked me out! SO sleepy, I could barely function! I saw him again yesterday and he gave me a prescription for a fibre laxative (I guess like metamucil). This confuses me because I'm vegan. If anyone is getting enough fibre, it is me. I also drink more than enough water to go along with this fibre.

Not really sure what is going on.

Anyone have any suggestions of what to look at next? Resources online?

I might try a gluten free diet again for a couple weeks to see if that helps.... but I'm feeling rather discouraged. I should be out running right now, but instead I'm sitting here with a hot compress on my abdomen and a cup of tea.

For me personally, before resorting to any prescription I would look at diet. There is something called an elimination diet that helps you figure out food sensitivities. It could be gluten, soy, or any number of things. It could also be because you are getting too much fiber. I know for me I was eating pretty much raw and changed to eating more cooked foods and feel much better.
