Mom Moved from ER to ICU to HOME

Friday, February 15, 2013

This morning my father called me to tell me he was leaving the hospital to go to work. Since he knew I was going to visit Mom today, he called to let me know that she'd been moved to ICU. Now I'm in a panic because he wouldn't tell me a lot. So I'm thinking the worse. I called Mom to see how she's doing, and to get the scoop - she's been moved to ICU because they don't have any beds available upstairs. Now I'm not in such a panic.

She has something called an atrial flutter. If they can't control it with meds, they may have to shock her heart. UGH! After I finish this blog I'll be going to research it some more. She said she got it because of her drinking and her caffiene intake. I don't know if it's something you have forever or not. I called my cardiologist to let him know for medical history.

That's all I know so far! Thank you for all the kind words on my previous blog and the requests to keep you all updated!

UPDATE!!! She is going home! Will let you know if anything else comes up when she comes home.

Sounds like she might have atrial fibrillation. I have that and when it first started, they did the Cardio conversion to get it back into natural rhythm. I have had it done many times and did not find out what my problem was until much later. My mitral valve was starting to close up and many years later I got it replaced with a bovine valve. Still have a-fib and have to take Coumadin (it thins your blood) to lessen the threat of a stroke. This started when I was 58 and now I am 72 and going strong.

Glad to hear she is home, must mean she is doing better.

Atrial fib can have a variety of causes. My Mom's began because of intestinal bleeding of unknown cause. The bleeding stopped, but they did have to shock her heart to get it back in rhythm. It was scary at the time, but obviously a common procedure. Take care of yourself during this stressful time.
