Graduation Date Set

Friday, February 15, 2013

I have been thinking about how to create a structure for myself, for my journey to healthy weight, to enact what author Eugene Peterson calls "A Long Obedience in the same Direction." (The book is not about weight loss; I just love the title.)

By doing simple behaviors day by day, I will arrive at my goal. Saying that is elementary. Executing it has eluded me in the past.

I have been praying and contemplating, and I have assembled a strategy: I will think of this like graduating from school. For school I never obsessed whether or not I would receive a diploma. I merely had to finish the course. I just needed to carry out each daily assignment, one by one, over the span of enrollment time.

Thus I chose a motivating and feasible graduation date for myself. Truly it should be called Commencement, because I have always in mind that at goal I will commence maintenance, as a permanent state.

I am officially embarking on my healthy habits course of action as of February 19, 2013. Around Sparkland I have noticed several people choosing a 500-day journey. For me that time period accomodates a one-pound-per-week weight loss to arrive at a healthy weight. In 500 days, if God is willing, I will graduate on July 4, 2014.

That inspires me because it is our traditional week at a lakeside family camp. All kinds of recreation and equipment is available that week, and I will be more ready for it than ever! as a vigilant maintainer!

Wow - never would have thought of this idea! I was browsing the team blogs ( I browse one of my teams daily) to look for one to respond to with a comment, a goodie, or a comment on the SparkPage. I happened upon yours for the 16th, so -of course - I first had to backtrack to this one. You have really "sparked" me with this concept!!

You are starting out on a journey and you have filed your flight plan (or road map) I have no doubt you will arrive at your destination with minimal detours. No u-turns allowed.

I'm still working on my plan but getting closer.

I love the Graduation Date. In school, you are right, I didn't think about. I just did as I was told. I love your plan and losing 1lb a week is definitely a SMART goal.

I love the comparison between graduating and reaching a fitness goal. For me as well, it was never a question of completing the assignment or finishing the course either, it was just a matter of finding the time to get the work done. One pound a week is definitely a SMART goal! I have pledged that too. (And you are well on your way with more than 3 lbs gone this week). emoticon

P.S. Thanks for all your support and the wonderful goodies you have sent me. Really motivational!

Interesting thought and it makes so much sense. Developing a routine and just doing it can accomplish so much.
