The problem with mirrors.

Thursday, February 14, 2013

I have a membership at a local gym and I still can't figure out why they have mirrors lining the weight area next to the indoor track that I walk. I suppose it's so people with beach bodies can check their progress, but it can be discouraging. For me at least. Luckily there are windows on the other side of the track so I can keep an eye on the progression of winter to spring. I can't wait until it's warm enough to walk to class!

The mirrors are for you to see if your form is correct. Don't be afraid of them.

Like everyone else says, for checking your workout form, not your "form". :) They can be intimidating though, but are necessary so you do your workouts correctly. Hugs! :)

Mirrors in weight rooms are so that people can see that they're doing the exercises right. Are you (generic) doing the exercise symmetrically? Are you isolating the muscle? Are you doing it safely?

Actually, I use the weight machines, and never use the mirrors.

For me, walking outside is prohibited by ice and snow; I blew out my left knee 10 years ago, and that's a no go. Moreover, I can't walk far enough for that to be good exercise -- hence the recumbent bike, floor ex, and weight machines.

My blog, today, is about people watching at the Y. Sounds like it will annoy the heck out of you, though. Sorry.

    Keep after it, anyway. emoticon

It's not just for the beach bods to check their progress. I do not have a beach bod, but I use the mirror to check my form as I do my exercises. Bad form can lead to injury. It's not a vanity thing.

I don't blame you. Walking outside in the fresh air is so much better anyway. In the meanwhile, don't let it get you down about the mirrors.

Please don't feel discouraged. The reason they put the mirrors in the weight area is so people can watch their form while lifting weight.
