Exercise: It Does a Body Good

When I initially lost my weight back in 1987, I did it strictly through diet and did not add any exercise. I was already pretty active with riding horses and my family were members of a tennis club so we did go swimming and played tennis on occasion. I had never been introduced to any formal exercise. Even for my high school phy ed classes, they let me substitute my horse back riding as I was very heavy and bullied because of it. Let's just say my high school years or any of my school years for that matter were nothing I look back at with any nostalgia. I was always lucky that I had the horses to turn to.
I wish I knew then what I have learned now. Exercise is good for so many more things than just weight loss. As most of you know, my doctor put me on water pills for my blood pressure. I take my BP almost every day before I exercise and, then again, about an hour after I am done with my workout. Before my workout, my BP is still a little high. After my workout, it is in the normal range. Go figure...
I also find my exercise time a great time just for me. I do it around the same time every day. Usually between 11:00 and 12:00 in the late morning. I have had time to answer my e-mails and take phone calls. The exercise time is 'Me" time. I do not answer my phone while I exercise. I don't think about work while I exercise. I just do it for me.
Yesterday, for the first time, my horse was puffing more than I was. Now, granted, JC has a heavy winter coat so I'll give him the sweating, but he was puffing. I think JC needs a better exercise schedule. He has convinced every human in the barn that we deprive him of treats so they all feed him. Nothing major just a mint or a piece of a carrot. I have decided that I have to get out there more to get him exercised. Going out to the field to eat doesn't seem to be doing the job.
Exercise is good for your joints and your heart. I'm finding my problem now is that exercises that used to get my heart rate up no longer do that. I have to work at finding something that challenges me with my limitations. I can't do any weight lifting, but I do add 1 or 2 lb hand weights from Leslie Sansone.
I just know that if I don't exercise, I get upset with myself and feel like I have missed out on something that day. I always push to get a 5k done and at least an hour of exercise. Wow, I never thought I would hear any of this coming out of me.
I challenge everyone who reads this to get just 20 minutes of exercise done today. Remember...it does a body good
