Half Marathon Training - Week 5

Still going strong! Week 5 ended with me running 19.66 miles for the week. All of the runs were outside which was AWESOME! I hate being stuck inside on the track. Monday and Wednesday were our normal runs. Then on Friday we decided to change it up a bit. We ended up running 3.9 and included stairs.

Saturday's long run was an interesting one. I got to my friend's house and she mapped out two different routes. One running through the ravine and country roads and another running through neighborhoods. I knew exactly what I wanted and she wanted to do the same thing. So ravine and country roads it was!

We set out feeling really good and keeping a good pace. Her house is very close to the ravine trails so it didn't take us long to get there. The trails were plowed and they looked promising. Well that all changed once we got down into the ravine. We came to the section that goes off towards the woods and it was NOT plowed! Oh shoot.....

We had to make that split decision to keep going or try a different route. The snow looked fairy packed down so I tell her "lets go for it". At first it wasn't too bad but we later noticed that it wasn't as "packed down" as we once thought. Very tough terrain as we were kicking up snow and running on the uneven surface. I could feel my ankles and calves getting sore and also noticed that our mile pace slowed WAY down. We were running between 11-12 minute miles. But we kept pushing along. It was a good 1 1/2 miles of this and we were so thankful to finally get some dry road. And what do you know.... once we got out of the snow our pace went up to 9:30 minute mile pace. That snow was holding us back. Can we say resistance running!

Of course we scaled back to our 10 minute mile pace because we had more miles to go. And.... HILLS! This course included 2 good size hills to run up. And after the leg / ankle burn running through the snow, it was difficult. But we made it!

The other resistance we had during the run was the wind. The wind was fierce on Saturday morning as a storm was getting ready to roll in. We had to deal with snow drifts on the road due to the open fields. And it felt at times that the wind was going to push us over.

We did have some good laughs though.... we talked to some horses, cows, and a DONKEY! LOL... along the way. I love that my friend is just as dorky as I am and can have fun and not worry about what people think. I love that about her and feel like I really can be my dorky self. LOL..... We were talking to the cows and the lone donkey that was mixed in the bunch in British voices. Don't know why... maybe all the fresh air was getting to us. LOL

We finished the run in 80 minutes for the 7.40 miles. Not too bad for all that we had to get through.

And I felt awesome for the rest of the day. Does exercising do that to you? After a hard workout or a really good run, it is almost like I am on a high for the whole day. I love it!

Now onto week #6.....

    exercising totally does that to me. it is my drug!!! i've got an 17-18 run on saturday and i'm so excited, if I do 18 miles it'll be my longest run to date!

    Nice work getting through the snow! We don't get any here, but we do have hills! Enjoy the rest of your HM training (you're lucky to have such a great running partner!) and your race!
