It's Valentine's Day and love is in the air.
For me, my love for my husband is enhanced by our mutual effort to look after ourselves, live healthy lives, and generally make sure we will stick around and not be a burden to others as we age.
Every day we are able to exclaim about something new that we see in ourselves or each other. Hugs are tighter when bellies are not in the way. Toned and muscular arms and legs look great whether you are male or female. A new number on the scale or a new size of jeans are reasons to celebrate no matter which of us they apply to.
And getting there together is fun. We plan our days of lunches and dinners out, our snacks after the gym. We follow one another's lead and help when it's needed. I brought DH over to SparkPeople. (He has since "sparked" many people. At work, they are all interested in how he has made his great transformation.) DH made sure we joined a gym and got some personal training. When I need extra motivation to get my workout in, DH is there for me. When he asks about low-calorie meals or special foods, I make sure we have them.
You will not find DH blogging his progress, so I will take the opportunity here to record how well he is doing. At his heaviest, DH wore size 40 pants and was up to a size 18 shirt. Today, he wears size 34 pants with a much-needed belt (he fits 33, but we have not yet updated his wardrobe) and a size 16 shirt. He's well on his way to bench pressing his own weight, maybe 75-80% there. (The candle burns at both ends on this one: his own weight is coming down while the weight he can lift goes steadily up.)
I am so proud of my husband and I love that we are doing this together. He has been a big part of my success. In the short time before he "got serious" and joined me, he still supported me in every step I took on my own journey.
That's LOVE, and that's worth celebrating, not just on Valentine's Day, but every day.
