The Quickly Vanishing Art of Letter Writting.

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

One of my sparkfriends today posted a blog about how he missed the magic of receiving a letter from a penpal when he was a child.

It reminded me of something.

When my brother passed away last fall, we found a hand written letter in his belongings. He had written it to me, and never sent it. It was such a comfort to find it. He was telling me how happy he was, although he was quite ill at the time.

What was the reason for writing the letter? Our father years before gave all of us gifts - pen sets. Years had passed, and dad passed away. A few years after that, Matthew - my brother - realized that dad may have given us the pens so we would write.

Dad was gone. Matthew lived close to Mom and our other brother. So he choose to write to me.

It was such a beautiful letter. I still have it. I likely always will.

I think I'm going to write a letter to each of my kids tonight.

Letters and cards are wonderful things. I make my son send written thank you notes to his grandparents. Part of that is because he's still learning and perfecting his handwriting and partically because it is nice for them to get.

Great Blog.

I love to write and to receive. I often trade coupons and slip in a short note of thanks just to be able to write something. It's definitely a dying art.

I think it's wonderful that you will always have a part of your brother.....and even your dad in a small way.....what a wonderful gift.
