Happy Ash Wednesday

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

So today is Ash Wednesday. The first day of Lent. According to the canonical gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke; Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the desert, where he endured temptation by Satan. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of this 40-day liturgical period of prayer and fasting. Of the 46 days until Easter, six are Sundays and Sundays are considered "feast" days during Lent .
Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of adherents as a reminder and celebration of human mortality, and as a sign of mourning and repentance to God. The ashes used are typically gathered from the burning of the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday.

As a Catholic I am to fast today. I am going to have a Slim-Fast meal bar, a Slim-Fast chocolate shake, and a Chipotle Black Bean burger. No fries or anything. That is about 1,065 calories. This will either make my body VERY happy, or very very sad. But, it is what I am suppose to do, so I will do it. I feel God has made me so much stronger these last few months. My mental, physical and spiritual strength is much stronger than it has ever been.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Lent who practice.

Although I am not a practicing Catholic, I did complete my spiritual education and convert many years ago. This is the first time I've attended Ash Wednesday Mass in over 20 years (some negative personal issues associated) and I am so glad that I did. I have also chosen my Lenten sacrifice relating to my sleep.
Today I managed a complete Fast drinking over 100 oz of water with the only "food" being the Communion wafer. Funny thing is that I don't even feel badly having been without food today. I'm very pleased with having made the commitment and stuck to it!

Hope you have a blessed Lent/Easter season. May He keep you in His care always!

I am not catholic, but looking at your blog seemed to make my day a bit more optimistic. Thank you for that.
