Still very icy

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

As you can see from the photo I took this morning, I still have a lot of ice around my house. (And you can see my trash can too, I don't normally keep that by the front door, but last week, after it was emptied, I did not want to trudge through the 8 inches of snow to put it back behind the house.) That is a problem area in the winter, when the snow melts and doesn't soak into the ground. The puddle gets so deep, it goes past my ankles in spots, and I have to wear rubber boots to get from my door to the car. This ice formed when we had warmer temperatures and it rained all night, and the temps were below freezing by morning.

I got my groceries today, and some ice melting salt; I sprinkled the salt around before bringing my groceries in. It didn't melt much because the ice is so thick, but it made it slushy and it's easier to walk in slush than it is a smooth sheet of ice. We just a need a warm enough to melt it, with sunshine instead of rain, so that it dry up as it melts. I also bought some ice melt stuff that is safe around plants to use on my steps and walkway, so it don't kill all the perennials growing in that area. A lot of people in the area are having a problem with the ice, and salt and ice melt are getting hard to find. I intended to get mine at Meijer with my groceries, but they were all out, so I had to go to Walmart, and their supplies are running low. I did buy enough to hopefully get me through with what is left of this winter though.

Had my chemo yesterday; hemoglobin dropped a little bit from two weeks ago, but it was at 10, which is still below normal but a good number for me. Normally mine is 9.7 or below. I didn't feel very good in the evening; started to feel nauseous, and ended up with a migraine on top of it. I took my nausea and migraine meds and I was in bed before 9pm. Today I feel better, and doing ok with the pain issues considering the time I spent on my feet shopping today.

Be careful on that ice. I hate trying to walk on it. My greatest fear is falling on the ice and no one being around to help me get my big butt up. Haha.

You are looking great. I will keep you in my prayers.

Be really careful around that ice. The idea to
use gravel to raise the area sounds good.
I think you are so good going shopping after
having chemo. Let's hopr the migraine goes away
and you feel better soon. Have a nice Valentines Day.

Is there a possibility of getting some gravel or some new paving stones to put in that area this summer to raise the ground up? That should help lessen the ice next winter. The ground underneath the stones has probably washed away and that's why the water gathers there. Not sure if you'd be able to afford it, but the best option would be to tear out everything and redo the area with sand, rocks, and pavers on top to aid with drainage.

Ice is terrible for walking on. Do take care and allow yourself to rest as well.

We have been so lucky to not have had any ice this winter *fingers crossed*! It is impossible to maneuver on it. Glad the hemoglobin is staying OK!! Sounds like you're still getting a lot done!

I'm so glad we haven't had ice here yet this winter. It can be dangerous to walk on for sure.

Hope you are feeling better today.

Ugh so glad we haven't had that mess yet. February tends to be our worse month of winter here. We have used kitty litter in a pinch when we were out of ice melt.
