60,000 Spark Points! Why Do I Spark?

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

Today I hit 60,000 Spark Points! When I looked at my SP Class of January 20-26, 2008, I saw 30,812 Members, but in February only 213 members have Spark Points and 11 members posted blogs. I thought about why I am still here when ten of thousands have left.

To continue to Spark year after year means I am getting something from being here. I get recipes, tips on healthful living, interesting articles, exercise information, supportive friends and interesting Teams. Of all the good things here, it's the 5% Challenges that keep me coming back.

Each 8 week Challenge gets me focused on my goals, plans, meals and exercise to lose weight and improve my health. Many times I have not been as successful as I would like to be, but yet again I refocus and get involved in the next 5% Challenge. Even when I fail, I have not quit, I start again.

I am starting my 14th 5% Challenge. I am working on the Countdown Assignments and my plans are coming together. I reviewed the Check Points - Have you got your gym clothes, runners, water bottle, etc. ready to go? What is your exercise plan? Do you know what diet you will follow? Found some recipes? Have you stocked up on the foods?

I have to update my Spark Page before the next challenge. Time has a way of slipping by and goals, progress and even programs change so it's good to renew my page. I've thought about all the reasons I want to lose weight. What do I want to change? How do I want to look? How do I want to feel? What things will I be able to do in the future with a slimmer healthier body?

I've had to consider all my Trigger Foods and situations. Can I pick a replacement habit or behavior that will cause me to pause, and think do I really want to do this, and why?

I have to consider the reasons/excuses on why my diet and exercise plans have not been well executed in the past. I have learned from my past behaviors and commit to doing better. I've taken my measurements and calculated my 5% weight loss of 11 pounds.

I can set a goal, but it takes preparation, planning and motivation to see it through to the end. Each 5% Challenge I reconnect with Spark Friends and meet lots of new Friends. It's the friendship and shared common goals in the 5% Challenges that keep me here.

Thanks Spark People for all that you offer on this terrific site! You have kept me going for 5 years, and I have learned so much and improved my health and outlook along the way.

My way of giving back is to invite people to join in the 5% Challenge which starts on Feb. 23rd. Team members will work towards losing 5% of their starting weight in 8 weeks by participating in team challenges that focus on exercise & healthy lifestyle habits. Letís have fun, make new friends and get in shape!

Well said, Lynn! Coming up on my 3rd Sparkversary, and as discouraged as I've been I have stayed and tracked food and exercise (as little sometimes as it has been), and kept reaching out to others, and appreciating the support that I've been given. No matter what, I look forward to Sparking every day, and feel that I would be much worse, if not lost, without it. Congratulations on 14 challenges!!! That is an accomplishment!

Yup, I sometimes wonder about myself - quit and started so many times. But this time is different - I'm going all the way! Maybe it took that long to iron out all the flaws in my regimen. Health has improved also! A very important benefit.

I think sparks makes all the difference. Even if your loss is slow and you may want to give up sparks gives you that nudge to keep going. I left for a while and the adage -Out of mind out of site - fits well. When I left slowly my healthy lifestyle habits just faded away and almost all the weight I had spent 3 years working off slowly crept back on. I think the thing that started my demise was I was a team leader on the blc challenges and had done it for a while. I decided to step away thinking it was consuming to much time and I needed to step back so I could focus more on me. What ended up happening is my spark fizzled. The camaraderie, and friendships and fun that I was having leading my team was what really kept me going and accountable. I joined so I have to keep going mentality but it works! Days I didn't want to do something, I felt that obligation that people were counting on me and they were doing their part so I had to do mine. There is a certain magic about what happens here. Something special how being connected to each others goals pushes us to work harder . How can we not try when people are cheering you on! Thanks for doing what you do and for wanting to, It takes special people to lead!

Thank you for the work you put into these 5% challenges.Like you I have been here a long time.I take medication for a spinal injury with the unfortunate side effect of weight gain.I keep on working on it and learning and for someone who was supposed to be a paraplegic I am still walking ! I attribute that to Spark if I had continued to pile weight on and not been able to keep moving I would have faced worse medical issues so I join you in thanking Spark for all they do to promote good health!

I've been here on SP since October 2009. I'm still tracking my food and exercise, even though I reached my goal in December 2010. Truthfully, I've gained back 10 pounds since then. Without SP I'd have probably gained it all back!

    Well said!

Especially the bit about giving back - is why I now do the CL in the 5% challenges.
And the bit about learning as we go along - I relate to that too.

I know how you feel. I joined Spark in 2006, and I've been on both sides of this situation. I felt so close to a lot of people that were on our starting team, and they fell off one by one, with only a few remaining still. Some will come back for a bit and then disappear. Eventually, I disappeared, gained back the weight and didn't log on except for once in a great while. But now I'm back and I'm reminded of all the great people, resources, and support I can get from this site. I hope I don't ever fall off the wagon and disappear from Spark ever again. Good job sticking with it. I think that keeping up with this site, at the very least, keeps you in the right frame of mind, even if you aren't losing as much as you'd like.

Your success is what keeps people like me coming back. I too have had success but have watched it slip away. Returning to the site has been the kick that I've needed. It reminds me of what I need to do in order to make those changes again. Good luck with the 5% challenge!

Great blog. It's good to remind yourself why you do something. Especially in a way that you can look back on when you're down.
