Dad is no longer in the diabetic range!

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

My dad was diagnosed as pre-diabetic in 2011, and shrugged it off, as many people do... in 2012 his numbers tipped him into the diabetic range, and after he got over some depression regarding his diagnoses, he got serious about fixing it!

Together with my mom, he's been eating better (about 90% vegan), and exercising, and he's lost about 20 lbs so far! I still can't believe that my meat-and-potatos, McDonalds eating Father is now essentially eating a plant-based-diet, and ENJOYING it! He sends me interesting vegan recipes by email daily.

More importantly, his blood sugar numbers (A1C values) are no longer in the diabetic range, or even in the pre-diabetic range!!! His doctors told him that if he keeps going like he is, in 2 years they predict he will be off ALL of his medication, including high blood pressure and cholesterol meds.

All of this is great, and I am so so SO proud of him! But what is even better is that the American Diabetes Association took notice and this week interviewed him for an article about his turn-around and about his commitment to the ADA event "Tour de Cure," which benefits diabetes research, treatment and prevention. He's training to ride in the 108 mile bike ride to benefit the ADA this summer, and has already raised over $1600, labeling him a "Tour Champion"

I'm just so proud of him! Here is a link to his fundraising site. I'm not soliciting donations (though if you want to, you can certainly donate). I'm just putting this up here as a source of pride! GO DAD!!!! SO PROUD OF YOU!
