I recently read an article in Consumer Reports on Health about prescription hoarding and the misuse of old prescriptions. It quoted an in-home study showing that of people over the age of 65, 30% hoarded 3 or more prescription medications. This is defined by having 3 or more containers of one kind of medication that a patient is not expected to use in a reasonable time frame. Patients express concern that if they donít keep leftover drugs on hand that they may not have access to them when they need them.
Some recommendations about prescription drugs are:
-Do not take expired meds. It can be risky or harmful to your health. The chemical composition of the pills can alter over time and lose potency. Bathroom cabinet storage of medications often accelerates this issue due to the humidity of the room.
