Info for self: stride length and distance walked

Monday, February 11, 2013

Just some info for myself about walking/daily steps. It says online that one mile is about 2,000 steps, but because my stride length is so short, it takes me more than that. I did these quick measurements and calculations while calibrating my pedometer and figured I may as well keep them here so I don't forget or in case I need it some day to measure distance or something.

1 mile = 63360 inches

my stride length = 23 inches

63360/23 = 2754 steps in one mile

Interesting. I think I would also be unable to train myself to do that. I imagine it wouldn't feel natural, and I think my parents told me not to swing my arms when I was a kid because I might hit someone, and also similar "ladies don't do ____" reasons. Funny to think about all the stuff we're trained not to do as "ladies" or heck, even just "good kids." XD

I have short legs and my DH has long legs. I take 3 steps to his 2. A physical therapist once told me to swing my arms as I walk, that would lengthen my stride. I was raised that a lady (hate the term) never swings her arms and cannot train myself to do it.
