A Goose in the Chicken Coup

Sunday, February 10, 2013

“I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:14).

Kierkegaard, the Danish philosopher, told a story about a goose who was wounded and landed in a barnyard with some chickens. He played with the chickens and ate with the chickens. After a while, that goose thought he was a chicken.

One day a gaggle of geese flew overhead, migrating home. They gave a honk up in the sky, and the barnyard goose heard it.

Kierkegaard said, “Something stirred within the breast of this goose. Something called him to the skies. He began to flap the wings he hadn’t used, and he rose a few feet into the air. Then he stopped, and he settled back again into the mud of the barnyard. He heard the upward call, but he settled for less.”

Is there a chance that this story is about you?

Are you settling for being less than you know in your heart God has called you and created you to be? It’s not just for your sake that you must respond to God’s call on your life—it’s also for all the other meaningful people in your life. The longer you wait before answering, the more annoying your life becomes to those around you. There are few things as disruptive to the peace and well-being of other people than a person who is running from God. How many lives are being distressed because you won’t answer the call?

And besides, are you really that happy clucking with chickens? Really?

God bless you, Pastor Mike

LOL I had to laugh when you said quote: And besides, are you really that happy clucking with chickens? Really?

Pastor you are right sometimes even though my Faith is so transparent I still wonder if I've done all I can here on earth and the answer is really NO.

Either I have that fear or I don't know how to go about it or I don't know what my calling is, I think we had this talk before.

Thanks for the reminder.

Thank you for turning my thoughts to the sky. Sometimes we get very comfortable with the "chickens" and forget what a limitless Spirit we are in Christ. Thank you for reminding me.......June

yup soaring like an eagle or in this case a goose.

I told a friend today something similar. She is beautiful like a strong oak tree, through seasons she stays at a cross road. Reaching her arms out beautifully and allowing much to fall on her and rest on her. But the eagle is soaring high and even though he may rest with her, he always leaves so he can get closer to God. Standing still is comfortable and many will make excuses never to break free and fly to Him, always settling because they believe in only one possibility. Standing still, beautiful yes...but still just the same. I would rather soar like an eagle than cluck with the chickens.

Thank You!
Hugs In Jesus!
Erin

Thank you for your blog post!

Made me really think about things. I'm guessing I'm still in the chicken coop. I plan on making that journey out as soon as I am able!

I appreciate your words!

I love to learn! Whether it's on-line or in person classes, I always have "something new up my sleeve" to learn. I think it keeps you young.

And it also allows me to meet so many wonderful people I wouldn't hace ordinarily met!

Great blog filled with plenty of food for thought. I love the scripture that instructs us to be content where the Lord has put us and we can only do that by being in His will for our lives. It is a comfort to know that I'm right where He wants me!!!

While I haven't always felt this way, I'm so incredily blessed to not feel left behind through the many ministries that keep me vibrant and steadfast in God's word and works he calls me to be a part of. The joy of the Lord is my strength. I continue to pray that my heart, eyes, and mind be open to the needs of God's greater community. There are so many needs . . . may more of his Children accept the call. With you, I remain a fellow heir in the Family of God! Hug, hug -- Evelyn

I love that illustration, Pastor Mike. I've been trying to get out of the chicken coop for years. I know the Lord is ready and willing to raise me up and help me spread my wing - as I learn to trust Him more.

Have a blessed week!

Loved your story, pastor. Some of the most stirring stories are laced with laughter. emoticon One of my fav authors was a pastor who had a very popular children's sermon ministry. He wrote down his sermonettes in a book titled, "Bird Life in Wington". Your blog today reminded me of him.

....:::seriously though, your analogy hit home...right to me heart. Thank you!

...:::honk-honk!:::
....LOL!! emoticon Laura
