Every time I'm down the gym (where I should be right now), there's a skinny 20-year-old blonde on the next machine to me. It's never the same one twice, you understand - the gym has an unlimited supply of them.

She'll be wearing one of these sleeveless vests that looks like a harness, spandex leggings, girly trainers and a thin film of sweat, just enough to proves she's really working at it.

And me? Fat, fifty-something and brunette-out-of-a-bottle, that's me. I wear a short-sleeved tshirt that hides the wrinkles in my 'pits, baggy jogging pants that are between 2 and 10 years old, depending on which pair I put on and which I fondly imagine hide my baggy 50-something body. And me Clarks trainers. My sweat tends to accumulate round the back of my neck. I'm also fuchsia in the face.

Thing is, I could go out and buy spanking new spandex. I thought about it, till I saw the price. To me though, the gym isn't about a visible lifestyle choice. It's about getting fitter and healthier. It doesn't really matter much to me what I wear so long as I can move comfortably in it and don't get arrested for exposing something nobody wants to see. The only bit of gym gear I've bought since joining SP is my sports bra because I got concerned that the girls were being a bit too assertive and I really didn't want them tied in a double bow round my neck. I already had the trainers, four pairs of jogging pants (I never wear anything else at weekends although I haven't jogged since I was 17) and umpteen tshirts in varying states of decrepitude (olive oil stains, holes and the crowning glory, one of the cats had peed on the one I intended to wear today).

Walking, I'm just as bad. I wear the same jogging pants for walking in as I do down the gym, but they have to be clean to go to the gym in. The same tshirts and sports socks. I would dearly love a breathable waterproof but not at 100 a time. I did buy hiking boots because my old trainers were letting in water. But I bought Clarks, not something expensive.

And equipment? One hula hoop which I swear I will get the hang of one day. One resistance band that smells so horrible I won't go near it (nor will the cats).

In fact my only real expense is the gym membership itself.

So there I am, living proof that you can be cheap and get your exercise in.

PS: two of my pairs of jogging pants have hideous orange bleach stains and one of the other pairs has knackered elastic. NO COMPETITION. NONE.

Another post mentioned having play clothes as a child. That clicked with me because that's what I wear around the house and on my wanderings. I can relate to your walking clothes - nothing fancy here either. I do spend money on what I put on my feet - not for fashion - but for health and comfort. Have to admit no bleach stains on my pants though - I don't use bleach. Keep walking in comfort!! emoticon

You made me laugh. I can just picture you next to one of the skinny blondes.
Don't feel bad -- I'm 66 and I need to lose about 50 pds. I try to wear clothes that will 'hide' my bulges. I hate tight clothes.

Have a great day.

I too was once 20 and probably never really appreciated the body I had, because I did not measure up to the Fashion Mags. Hopefully these young beauties will not take themselves for granted because time marches on for us all:) And that ladies we can all attest to that, if it gets depressing just imagine them in 30 years and you will probably get a chuckle. emoticon

You made me smile, as I know those blondes and look a lot like you and am in that 50 range too. Thanks for the smile and chuckle. I'll enjoy following your progress this year and wish you luck on your goals (though we all know it is just blood, sweat and tears and a few good laughs that gets us there)

So very true! We are like minded! Why buy something new to wear to the gym so it can get nasty? It's a place to sweat and work your rear off, not a fashion runway.

Kudos to you!

LOL. I worry about the blond too! I live far from the gym and haven't spent much either. I buy a cheap fitness dvd every now and then. It is good to know I am not alone in the old, worn out and stained clothing. Your blog made my day. Keep up the good work at the gym and the motivation you just gave us all.

My husband says we are not cheap - we are frugal - sure whatever. I work out in old comfy and baggy clothing. I do have a new pair of running shoes - but those are more for safety than they are for fashion -- and I think I sweat all over.

At the present time we are to cheap...frugal and our hours are too crazy to join a gym. But we have a treadmill, a stepper and some weights ---works for me.

Thanks for sharing your story and for making me smile

Thank you for your blog! lol I literally laughed out loud at my desk. One day I was working out with my trainer and was wearing grey workout capri's and they had an orange tint on the right thigh. I was doing sit ups and she called me out!!! "IS THAT CHEETO Cheese on your pants?" I tried to deny it, but it was true!!! I have a three year old and we had been eating cheeto's before we went to the gym!!! Note to self that day... Don't eat cheeto's before a workout! (I honestly had just a few!) lolol

Who CARES what you look like at the gym!

I also am a fuscia faced girlie! lolol

Lol! Loved this. I never see another overweight person at the gym. Every person that goes to my gym is toned and can easily do WAY more than I can. But lucky me, they don't have the expensive clothes.
I have to admit I splurged on clothes because I only had one pair of sweats and I couldnt keep up with the wash to make sure they were clean.

I found my gym clothes on sale though. At Wal-Mart. $5 for each pair of capris and $5 for each shirt. My splurge cost me $30 for three pair of work out clothes. It was worth it since the shirts cover up how much I sweat and I didn't think my worn out, almost ripping, blue jeans would cut it at the gym.

AMEN. I am SO cheap about workout clothes. I did but a sweat wicking tshirt, thin jacket and pants in October when I thought I could continue running in the winter WRONG! So I'll wear those into the ground!

I am at the gym to WORK and I admire anyone there doing more than posturing!

Keep on trucking!

emoticon Haha! My workout clothes are a mess too. My favorite tshirt is getting too big, but I still wear it or at least carry it to the treadmill to wipe sweat off of my beet red face. It's powder blue with a weird yellow honey mustard stain all over the front and coffee stains on the side (I can't explain it). I just like to think that I'm keeping it classy. The 20 year old blonde always makes me feel unattractive, but I just tell myself she's wasting space with her weak sweat output emoticon I'm a little mean sometimes.

Great blog - the only exercise gear I ever spend any money on are my running shoes. Everything else usually comes from the Goodwill Resale store. The one exception was a running jacket (very pricey) that I bought using gift certificates that my family gave me for my last birthday. The downside is that it was SO expensive, I hate to wear it running and have mostly worn it out when going to and fro to the store etc,

I loved your blog, it was awesome. Totally painted a picture. I like to hit the thrift stores for work out gear, and anything for that matter. You can find really nice stuff that will make you feel better for cheap, like a couple bucks. Some of the stores where we live do quarter sales and bag sales (fill us a bag for like $2). May try checking in your area. Just looking better will make you feel better. Much Love

PatsyP63 is onto something, CC. Clothes should make you feel good, even when you don't feel good about you. This isn't vanity; it's confidence!

I would add that you gotta invest in great shoes. It is an investment because you will put more into those workout shoes/running shoes, whatever kind...than you will any other time of day with any other shoe. emoticon
