Not Advisable, But I Did It Anyway.

Saturday, February 09, 2013

Today I ran a half marathon race. Exactly 6 days after doing a full marathon last Sunday.

This is not advisable. You need to rest up after the herculean effort of running a full marathon. Different advise is given on how much to rest, but everyone seems to agree you need to rest a lot. I guess at my age, 66, it is even more important to stay off your running feet for a while.

But, I had scheduled this HM before I scheduled the full marathon, then forgot about it. I saw it on my calendar a while ago and was undecided whether I'd do it or not. I decided at first I'd just walk most of it and run a little bit and at least collect my shirt, bib and participant medal.

Then today came, and I got in line at the start. I felt okay, not great, but able to do this. I started out with a 2 or 3 minute run, then walk for 30 to 60 seconds. Nothing etched in stone, I just ran as I felt. I got warmed up and was doing okay, so I got a bit more vigorous in the running portions. The miles piled up, and now I'm around mile 5 and I noticed I'm not getting that invigorated feeling I usually get at this point. I am more tired than usual. Okay, it's to be expected. Let's keep up the pace and see how I do under duress.

The miles go by, still run/walking. No second wind yet. Drat. I am going to have to push for the entire race. OK, Boilham, let's see what you're made of. Now I'm doing the guy thing, and trying to prove I'm not so old, and I just need to gut it out and push for a decent time.

I'm even passing a few slower runners towards the end. I am still at the relative back of the pack, but doing okay. Okay is the word I use most for this race, 'cuz I never once got that rush of energy where I felt like I could run forever. That's okay (damn, I said okay again) because this is now a test of endurance. I am into it.

Tired all the way, I pass the mile markers. Taking in water a lot and a couple of GUs. It's not too warm, but I am perspiring more than usual. My heart rate is higher, too. I'm thinking this is good (thought, I was going to say okay, didn't you?) because I need to push myself beyond my comfort level once in a while.

The last few miles whiz by. Soon enough I'm at the 12 and still running a vigorous pace. I tried to do the last mile without walking, but I confess I pretty much needed that rest, so I did walk. Then the last half mile was upon me and then down the finish corridor I went.

I glanced at the clock as a ran under - it said 2:17:34 and then a few more steps and I passed the finish mat.

They never posted my time on the time sheets. I guess I finished just when they were tabulating the awards, so it's good I took a look at the clock. I always forget to hit my stop button on my watch, so when I finally stopped my watch it said 2:18:20.

I went to the guy with the computer and he assured me he had my time in there. So, I won't know the exact time until I see it online.

But hey! I took second place in my AG. The guy who finished first had a nice time of 2:06:34, a pretty fast pace.

So I had a good race today, surprised myself with what I think is a pretty good time considered I had no right being out there running today. I should have been home resting. I feel great right now. No pain, or injuries, so that's cool.

I think I will take a bit of time off now. Unless there is another race coming up soon. Just kidding.

Thanks for reading and have a great day.

Edit: official time 2:17:42

Thanks for the race report! It is hard when you never get your second wind, but it sounds like you had some great stamina and mental toughness to stay focused and keep racing. Keep it up!

Glad to hear your mental dialogue! 2nd in Age group, nice! That cracked me up, well, oops, looks like I scheduled a run/event I forgot about, better get my shoes on, excellent mental perseverance, but glad you didn't push so hard you got injured. I have a bad habit of sometimes not knowing when to pull back to prevent extended injury recovery. An important skill to learn.

I'm glad you didn't let conventional wisdom keep you from testing your limits. As with so many things in running, the amount of rest needed after a long race is only a suggestion and differs from one person to another. We never know what we are capable of unless we try, and it's always better to try and fail than not try at all. Congratulations on another great race. You'll be needing another medal hanger soon.
