It's Saturday which means it's my "push" day. Today is a 4-miler to be ran at a speed that I'm pushing myself to achieve, rather than my favorite easy/long runs which still require me to push myself, just not at faster speeds than I'm used to. Last week's run was harsh, but looking back I see a few things I did that were not in my favor and probably helped cause the run to be so rough.
#1 rule for me: no alcohol the night before a run :) Not even a little tiny bit. As I've aged I've found my sleep suffers tremendously with even just 1 glass of wine. I love wine, but not if it's going to take the pep out of my step. It's not worth it. I'll just have to save it for vacations or holiday times.
So comparing how I feel right now to last week after an evening of 2 whole glasses of wine, I can see a huge difference in my energy level. So lesson learned....hopefully for the last time as I know I've had this discussion with myself before as it seems oddly familiar ;)
#2: The new shoes I've been breaking in just are not doing it for me. They are great shoes, but my feet keep falling asleep and no matter how loose I make the laces or what kind of sock I'm wearing (if any), it isn't helping. So I've found a new shoe I'm hoping to get soon, and in the meantime the oldie-but-goodie comes out of retirement. I wore them on my Wednesday run and it was like two old friends meeting up and having a great time. It was the best run I've had in a long time.
So we'll see how it goes out there today. Getting into the frame of mind of knowing that this will be a tough run, because it needs to be, is new to me. But I saw the reward from last week's push in the Wednesday run which I was able to do at a good solid pace a bit quicker than normal. I'm like everyone else, I love rewards :)
