I feel hopeless

I would like to get back on track to a healthier lifestyle. So much has changed in my health since I've joined Sparkpeople. I have high blood pressure, edema, acid reflux, chest pains, lactose intolerance. I've been eating so poorly for days and months now, my mouth is dry, I can't think straight, low energy, fatigue, etc. I'm only 22 and my weight is now 345. I was listening to my Mom tell stories of how I used to LOVE eating my fruits and vegetables as a kid and very little meat. Now, I don't know how I let myself go. I don't know what to do anymore.

If it helps, I no longer consume fast food hardly if any. Last month, I went an entire month, and a week and a half ago, I had a combo meal. The taste was off. No more for me, that was enough! Pizza and pasta is a weakness for me. I'm practicing going meat free, possibly vegan. And I drink mostly water these days. I don't like taking medicine. Basically, I don't know what to. I want to be a role model for my family and Sparkpeople!

Please be patient and kind to yourself. You have made many changes and will find what you need to do for you And as you change your needs will change. Such exciting new experiences are awaiting you. The great news is that you have the power to make them happen. I hope you will share your adventures of this journey with us.

    Don't be so hard on yourself. You are very young, you have lots of time to turn things around. At your age, your body is still very responsive to changes. You just have to give it time.
Most importantly, don't forget that it's hard, if not impossible, to change everything overnight. Focus on the one most important issue, establish a new habit, then go to the next one. Sounds like you already made a good start cutting out the fast food.
You should really talk to a doctor about general lifestyle changes; you might need some medication temporarily to help with the acute problems until you have it under control. Even if you don't have medical insurance and have to pay for a visit, it's money well spent. Check community resources, there might be free or low cost clinics, health fairs, etc. Also, there may be some support groups.
What helped me was seeing a dietician at the local hospital's diabetes education center. I didn't think it would, but she gave me so much good information in just half an hour! Ask your doctor for a referral, or call your local hospitals, health departments, etc.
Keep logging in to SP, and hang in there. Remember, one step at a time! You will get healthy, just keep chipping away at the problems, one by one! You can do it!

    I am sorry you are struggling. We all go through this at some point in our journey and it is ok!

First, you don't have to give up anything. You don't have to be a Vegan to lose weight. I actually suggest not being a Vegan unless it is for ethical reasons. I was a vegetarian for several years, and that is when I gained a good deal of weight.

Second, you are making changes, and that is great! Keep drinking that water!!

You don't have to give up pizza or pasta. You just have to eat less of them. Try having a slice of pizza and a large salad. Take small nibbles of the pizza and savor it! Limit yourself to a serving of pasta, and again, fill in with a large salad.

  Hey there Dream, you are here on SP and you are TRYING. That is the first step. Take it day by day. You can do this, You are AWESOME. A whole month and a half with no fast food is no small accompishment. Keep up the good work. Remember to not strive for perfection because no one is perfect. What really works for me is to fill out my nutrition tracker first thing in the morning when I get to work. That way I have a plan for the whole day. Planning is a huge factor in weight loss. Try making small changes at a time. Instead of going Vegan tomorrow, try having a healthy snack. Once that is a habit, then make another healthy change, like using less salad dressing on your salad. Each tiny effort counts. If it helps I am of the same age as you and am here to chat any time. Have a great day and remember to keep going forward. The past is the past don't let it define you.
