Best gifts ever!

Friday, February 08, 2013

My mom sent me a package with some belated birthday gifts yesterday. While my husband looked on with a confused look on his face, I squealed in delight. BEST GIFTS EVER!!!!

The items themselves are pretty ordinary and not the greatest quality, but they carry huge sentimental value to me. And I can't believe my mom was able to pry them away from my grandma!

First, a very old spoon. I remember my grandma cooking with this thing when I was a kid. A little kid! My mom says the same thing, so you know this spoon goes way back. I didn't know just how old it was until I talked with my grandma last night. She said it belonged to her grandmother and she remembers learning to cook with it. It doesn't get any more awesome than that.

I also remember this plastic heart pendant from when I was younger. My grandma never wore it, but she always had it hung over a bedpost or on the side of a mirror. She told me that my grandpa had made it and given it to her when they got married right before he deployed with the Navy. He said, "This way you can keep me close to your heart." Not gonna lie, that makes me tear up every time I think about it. My grandparents are the cutest couple ever, married more than 60 years and friends since about 7 years old. When I think about the idea of true love, I think of them. And this pendant may be fading (it used to be bright red), but what it represents remains vibrant and true.

My mom also sent some jewelry that my uncle made after I was born. I didn't take a photo of that because it's a little controversial. I was surprised my mom gave it up!

Sentimental, heart-felt gifts win me over every time!

Oooo oooo, I have a cute old-person love story you will like. My BFF's grandpa was dying of brain cancer and sort of losing control of his mental faculties. My BFF and I went over to see him. He and I were sitting talking, and he was sort of repeating himself over and over, when suddenly, he leaned in close to me, pointed to the kitchen at her grandma, and said to me, "You see that girl over there?" I said yes. He said, "That's MY girl. Isn't she beautiful?"

Also makes me cry a little. And it wasn't even my grandparents!

So nice to have gotten those items from your grandmother!! Sometimes the things that are most valuable to us have almost no "value" by more standard measures. I'm so glad that you get to hear the stories of these treasures from those who remember first-hand. What a sweet story about your grandparents. Married for more than 60 years! Beautiful!
