Recovery! And a Rant!

Friday, February 08, 2013

I felt surprisingly good after the marathon. I did some easy walking on Monday and Tuesday, and by Wednesday, I was ready for a short run of just under 2 miles. I ran again on Thursday and Friday. Saturday, I had a massage, which felt like HEAVEN!

So, of course, I had to go and do something dumb by running TEN MILES on Sunday. Why not? I mean, I ran more than double that amount just a week ago, right? Hehe. My left IT band started bugging me towards the end of the run, so I rollllllllled it out when I got home. I will also admit that poor eating choices over the prior few days drove the decision to run too much. DUMB! Anyway, I rested on Monday, since Sunday was a late night watching the Super Bowl.

Tuesday, I ran 6 miles and my IT band started bugging me towards the end of the run. However, I have not had to deal with any further static from that pesky area of my body because I got really sick on Tuesday. Immunity down from the marathon, I caught whatever was going around. Sore throat, stuffy head, body aches, the whole 9. Oh, and yesterday, my lips were so chapped, they split and started bleeding at work. For TWO AND A HALF HOURS, I couldn't get my lower lip to stop dripping blood. It was so disgusting and embarassing, not to mention unhygenic! GRRR! So, I rested Wednesday, Thursday and again today. The only exercise I have gotten in is foam rolling twice a day. I am hoping the rest just shuts down whatever guff that IT band is thinking of giving me, because I just DO NOT have time to spend at the chiro's office. I may try a short run either tomorrow or Sunday. I am not overly worried because a week or 2 of rest, especially after a marathon, will not throw me off in the grand scheme of things. Wish I had remembered that LAST week! :D

What else? We had a few people over for an impromptu Superbowl party and I have to say that while I love entertaining and our new home is set up GREAT for doing so, Larry and I are not inviting anyone over for a long time. First of all, we are ALWAYS doing the hosting. Even though our friends all have perfectly fine places for hosting, we never get a reciprocal invite. Instead, people suggest a group outing somewhere where everyone splits the bill, which never works out as there are always several people that order more food or the most expensive thing or lots of drinks or bottled water or something, plus, the restaurant wants to turn the table, so where do you go after an hour and a half?

Next, I am totally FED UP with people and their FOOD ISSUES!!!! These were the comments we got from people who are normally very polite and civilized. "Are those veggies organic? I only eat organic". "We brought our own steak for the grill because we *only* eat locally sourced, grass fed, cruelty free beef." [side note - I can't be bothered with that, so I JUST DON'T EAT MEAT, GIVE IT A TRY SOMETIME - oh, wait - it's rude if I say that, but you can tell me all about how you met your meat before you eat it and how THAT'S superior. OK!]. "You guys always have junk." "Is that dip homemade? Ugh, Ken's?! Really?"

I mean, will it kill you to eat a few non-organic veggies ONE FREAKING NIGHT when someone has spent considerable time and effort preparing food for you??? I am just DONE! I could have been reading a book, working in the yard, napping, etc, instead of preparing food for our guests! I mean, yes, if someone has a food allergy, fine, of course you accomodate them, but I have never encountered someone with a legitimate food issue (ie: celiac, vegan/vegetarian, etc) being so stridently emphatic about what someone else is serving them!!!!

OK, rant over! :D Fingers crossed for a healthy upcoming week!

UGH rant JUSTIFIED!!! I am totally with you! It costs a LOT of money and a lot of time to have guests over and feed them - then you invite them into your home and serve them and to have them be ungrateful after that, no thanks!!! I have a friend who is gluten sensitive and I try to accommodate, but she would NEVER bitch at me if I didnt. Hmph. In other news, funny how you ended up getting the rest your body needed - too bad it had to get sick to give you the message! Your dedication is always amazing!!! Hope you enjoyed the rest a little - even if it did have to come with illness :( HUGS!

I hope that you are starting to feel better, definitely rest up and hopefully after your break your IT band issue will have healed *crossing fingers for you*

URGH - about the picky friends! It would be nice is everyone sort of chipped in on the invites BUT then to make comments about the food offerings too...ridiculous! Perhaps implementing a rotating dinner party schedule would be a good idea.

I hope you're feeling better. Dr. Oz had a show in colds just when I started coming down with a cold a few weeks ago. He listed all this stuff to buy, so I bought it all (cost me about $60 at the health food store), and it really kept the symptoms at bay, and by the time I started my new job I was over it (less than a week!).

As far as the picky friends go, you can ignore them, or if you want to make them stop and think about what they're saying, you can always throw the old "How do you expect me to feel when you say that?" They might think you're getting confrontational, but it will probably make them not say anything next time. That or they will decline the invitation. If it makes you feel better, I was having a pot luck and one vegetarian friend said she would bring a salad. I had planned on making a nice tossed GREEN salad, but since she volunteered, I thought it was great to save me that work. Well she shows up with store bought potato salad and cole slaw - stuff I rarely eat due to all the mayonaise. Then she asked if she could take home my leftover rice and salsa I made for the grilled chicken to feed to her birds THEN she complained b/c the salsa had avocado in it and avocado is toxic to birds. REALLY? I didn't know I was cooking for her birds!

Anyway, I am so impressed with your marathon time, and so happy that you qualified for Boston. You have been and remain a real inspiration and motivation to me.

Hang in there. If it is your IT Band we know that can heal. Love the foam roller, my best friend. Hopefully, it feels better really, really soon.

As for the friends..... UGGG. I wish I lived by you and could invite you over LOL. You sound like an amazing hostess and have every right to be bugged.

Thanks for the blog. Hope you have a great weekend!

Man---- feel better woman! For real.. that sucks! And no, a couple weeks of "rest" will not throw you off--- a bit. I hope that whatever this sickness is- is GONE ASAP! I still find it weird that you guys have a flu season considering its so warm all the time (but I realize it makes common sense- so saying that just makes me sound dumb)
Anyways... as for disrespectful friends... either laugh about them behind their back and make fun fo them after they leave-LOL... you know, because aside from that BS, they have great qualities and are good friends to you.... or forget them! I mean... there is no need to stop hanging out, but I think you are right that dealing with this BS is just not worth the effort!!! Another alternative might be to just order JUNKY PIZZA and wings next time and some really good wine...and truly give them something to complain about! Then, you can sneak your non-organic veggies out of the fridge when they're not looking... I say whatever.
We don't host much, because I suck being a host and my house is small and I never have time and dealing with lots of people in my house feels like this overwhelming experience-LOL--- total BS excuses btw. So I try to have parties every so often-- to counteract my inadequacy and discomfort of being a host. Truthfully, let me just say, I would feel 100% the same way if that happened to me. I would be like- F that! Not worth it. But, on the other hand... the solution might be stop inviting those types and just invite the laid back kind of friends....

I like small get togethers a lot better- our friends and us usually rotate between houses-- like we had them over NYD and we went over there for Superbowl... and sometimes we meet half way at a neutral spot--- it tends to work for us :-)

And I agree-- splitting checks is overrated! Just pay for your own food and let me pay for mine. I find that perfectly acceptable-- sometimes Dan gives me a hard time about it, but I generally abide by that rule and it works out in the end. Of course, no one said there is anything wrong with being generous every so often-- but on my terms!

Feel better and keep rolling- HUGS!!!

A little rest is all you need, Sharon. You ran like a superstar, at the ING marathon, and now you need to take it easy for a bit.

Wow, you bad been dealt a bad hand of friends. Sorry a few of them do not know how to politely accept or decline your snacks for the Superbowl. They have the choice to eat THEIR food at home, before they come to your house, or eat what you made, for one night, and realize they will not die from not eating organic or grass fed food. I know you just needed to get it out of your head; I am surprised at what some people say or do. At my son's Tae Kwon Do school, I heard one mom left her 4 and 6 year old daughters unattended to watch their big brother while she shopped at Publix (over 10 blocks away). I feel safe, here in Doral, but not that safe.

Feel better soon.

Sorry you're sick--I hope you feel better soon! But I'm glad something is keeping you away from running for a couple of days, haha. ;)

Holy cow, RUDE!! I would be so incredibly offended. Lighten up and enjoy the company. Sheesh!

Wow, how rude!!! I have celiac, and I never expect anyone to accommodate me. I even took my own fried chicken to my daughter's rehearsal dinner. I was the only person there with a chicken leg in my purse. Hahahaha... I would be totally annoyed at the rude people. Good grief.

Yeah, I'd be done too. I'm vegan and organic but would NEVER expect anyone to accommodate me. I always take care of myself, whether it's bringing a dish to share or eating before I go to the party. That's just rude. Sorry your friends are like that. But it would be a VERY long time before I hosted anything ever again.

Take it easy on the IT band. I would rather be down 2 weeks than a whole year nursing that injury. Just give it time and lots of attention with that roller.
