The news from the vet was not good. While he doesn't actually have cancer, he has a tumor that is growing inside him and basically taking over. The vet was amazed that Toby is doing as well as he is, because the x-rays show the tumor is massive and spread throughout his body. The prognosis is not good and the only advice the staff gave us is to enjoy him (the "while you can" went unspoken, but we knew what they meant). So, that is what we are going to do. While he can still enjoy eating, we're going to give Toby all the treats and food he wants, including people food begged from mom's plate. Every day after work will be a nice walk for as long as he wants to go. This weekend will be a car ride/road trip so Toby can ride and nap, and then enjoy a walk in a quiet park with lots of new smells and paths to explore. I don't know how many good days Toby has left, but I do know my husband and I been given an opportunity to love him a while longer and to treat him like the prince that he is to us, and I'm going to do just that. None of us really has any guarantee of our tomorrows, anyway, so let's all take this reminder to live each day the best we can to heart.
