The Skinny on Different Diet Plans

Friday, February 08, 2013

Many people find results with their weight and exercise goals with different types of programs or diets according to ShopSmartMag.org. Their criteria were overall satisfaction not necessarily the most weight loss.

The # 1 program is called MyFitnessPal. It allows you to keep a food diary and track your exercise on your phone. The app is free for Android, Apple, Blackberry and Windows phones. For this program, 15% reached their weight goal.

The second favorite was the Paleo Diet. This diet steers you toward eating ‘like a caveman’. It includes lots of lean meat and seafood, fresh fruits, non-starchy vegetables. It allows no-diary, cereal grains, legumes, processed foods or refined sugar. 19% reached their goal, but it can be fewer food choices available.

Mediterranean Diet was voted third best. You eat lots of vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, and fish. Limit your meat intake and cook in olive oil. Yogurt is the only dairy included, a bit of cheese and very little sweets. Not enough people shared their data to rate the percentage of success.

Spark people was voted #4. People liked the mobile app and community support of the site (I often post my blogs here). It helps the user track their food/exercise. It has recipes, menus and provides exercise videos for everyone to use. 7% of those surveyed said they reached their weight/fitness goals.

Weight Watchers was next with the Points Plus Program. The majority of people tried this method with 13% reaching their goal.

The remaining programs were #6- South Beach Diet, #7- Glycemic Index Diet, #8- Low Carb Diet (other than Atkins), #9- Medifast, #10- Atkins Diet, #11- Jenny Craig, #12- Slim Fast and #13- was Nutrisystem.

If you read my blogs you know that I am not a diet enthusiast. I have found results in eating whole foods, but many people find that trying a program gives them the support they need to kickstart weight-loss. You need to choose a plan that is practical, supportive and helps you KEEP the weight off over time. Yo-yo dieting is harmful to your systems and deflating to your motivation so be strong in your goals.
