Winter 5% Challenge

The Winter 5% Challenge, right here on SparkPeople, is gearing up to start. I’m not sure when it will start, as they want a few more people. If anyone is interested, I think you’ll have to let me know so I can send you an invitation, because it’s a private SparkTeam.
The idea of the challenge is to lose 5% of your body weight (or maintain). And count activity minutes which convert to virtual miles on a virtual journey around the world (that part’s kind of weird, so you just have to suspend disbelief and go with the flow). There are also weekly activities you can participate in, such as counting cups of water or fruits and veggies; some of these activities I find easier to accomplish than others. But it wouldn’t be called a challenge if it was all easy.
You get assigned a team, so there is as sense of camaraderie. Most teams are competitive, with some being more so than others. From what I can tell, the activity minutes (counted as miles) are what help your team's standing the most. The journey is the key, and weight loss is a great bonus.
The first assignment is getting ready. I wear my pedometer daily, and I have the RunKeeper app on my cell phone, so I can track my walks around town. I have walking shoes and running shoes, as well as hiking shoes. I wear the hiking shoes in winter, as they keep my feet warmer and drier in cold New England.
In the next 2 days, though, I probably won’t be walking much. I’ll be shoveling snow. We are expecting up to 2 FEET of the stuff. I do hope the weather people are wrong, but shoveling is definitely good exercise.
